The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as a Senior Assistant Attorney General (Senior AAG) in the Civil Rights Division. The Civil Rights Division is responsible for enforcing state and federal anti-discrimination laws and advancing the rights of Maryland residents through impactful civil enforcement actions. The Division is led by a Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief Investigator, six attorneys, two Investigators, and a Paralegal.
The Division litigates high-impact matters on behalf of the people of Maryland involving systemic and widespread discrimination, including:
- Housing discrimination and unfair housing practices
- Employment and workplace discrimination
- Discrimination in places of public accommodation, services, businesses, and recreational opportunities
- Violations of Maryland’s hate crimes laws
The Senior AAG will manage complex civil rights investigations and litigation matters from inception through resolution. Responsibilities include pre-litigation investigation, including the issuance and enforcement of administrative subpoenas; drafting and reviewing pleadings and dispositive motions; conducting discovery; litigating significant motions and appeals; negotiating settlements; and enforcing consent decrees and other injunctions. The Senior AAG will also serve as a key litigation resource across the OAG, providing strategic counsel to senior leadership and the Attorney General’s executive team.

Classification: Senior Assistant Attorney General
Experience: The ideal candidate will have at least six (6) years of legal experience, along with exceptional analytical, research, and written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should be highly motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The selected candidate must demonstrate the ability to identify, investigate, and pursue high‑impact civil rights matters; lead investigation and litigation teams; work with expert witnesses; engage in settlement negotiations; and litigate and try cases. Membership in both the Maryland Bar and the Federal Bar (or the ability to waive in) is required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in housing, employment, public accommodation, or related areas of law, as well as those with demonstrated experience working with communities and individuals affected by discrimination.
