Senior Building InspectorJOB DESCRIPTION:Under general direction of the Chief Building Official, coordinates and performs the operation of inspections for new and existing residential buildings/structures and commercial buildings/structures as needed to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Duties also include complaint investigation, assisting/responding to inquiries from the general public, contractors and city staff. Regular attendance is an essential job function. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:â Initiative and independent judgment as it relates to minor inspection issues.â Make decisions based on technical discretion, sound judgment, and familiarity with a variety of codes, ordinances, and construction methods or problems.â Ability to interpret adopted building codes and oversees its enforcement.â Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications.â Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with building contractors, workers and the public regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.â Ability to maintain, update and ensure the accuracy of inspection records, project documentation and project files, both electronic and in paper form.â Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.â Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.â Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.â Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with builders, contractors, owners, and the general public via phone, e-mail, or in person.â Ability to effectively handle sensitive situations requiring courtesy, persuasion, and tact.â Ability to handle confidential matters in a responsible manner.â Ability to walk/move about on uneven surfaces.â Ability to work in or around hazardous construction sites and heights greater than 20 feet.â Ability to walk for up to 45 minutes or longer at a time; ability to stand for up to 45 minutes or longer at a time; ability to sit for up to 60 minutes or longer at a time.â Ability to climb stairs and ladders and to bend, stoop, and kneel as required.â Ability to work in enclosed spaces as high as only 36 inches.â Skill in communicating orally and in writing.â Skill in use of personal computer and mobile devices, including Microsoft Office or similar software, e-mail, MyGov and the internet.â Knowledge of pertinent local, state, and national codes and ordinances. It is required that the applicant for this position have extensive working knowledge of the International Building Code and National Electrical Code as adopted by the city. â Knowledge of proper construction methods in building, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work.REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:â High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.â Seven (7) or more years of experience in general building, contracting, municipal inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential buildings/structures, i.e., / building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc. or any equivalent combination of education and experience. â A plumbing inspector’s license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.â Possession of the following ICC certification(s): ICC Residential Combination Inspector (B1, E1, M1, P1) and ICC Commercial Combination Inspector (B2, E2, M2, P2) or ICC Building Inspector (B1, B2, B3, 21) and ICC Building Plans Examiner, Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner. Possession of ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) certificate may be substituted for any of the above certifications. â Valid Texas Drivers’ License DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
