Job Summary

The Senior Civil Engineering Technician - Substation functions as a technical design specialist and/or supervisor, applying advanced technical expertise to solve complex engineering design challenges within a specific discipline. This role contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions and utilizes digital design tools, including CAD, BIM, and 3D modeling software, to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation and project deliverables. The position also provides technical guidance, training, and oversight to engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards.

Job Description

  • Establish and communicate appropriate design and graphic standards.
  • Review project requirements to determine the correct formats and deliverable content.
  • Promote quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections.
  • Review design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency.
  • Ensure deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes.
  • Participate in and lead process improvement and change management activities.
  • Manage drawing control and maintain historical project records.
  • Apply engineering principles and established design practices to complex designs.
  • Exercise sound judgment in interpreting inputs and making deliverable-related decisions.
  • Handle complex technical assignments and provide guidance to other professionals.
  • Perform design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and documentation.
  • Review deliverables produced by others for quality and accuracy.
  • Coordinate presentations, production design, and the use of electronic design tools.
  • Monitor production to ensure consistency, budget, and schedule.
  • Program control systems or support plant start-up activities within the area of expertise.
  • Coordinate with other design groups to exchange information for design development.
  • Support field activities as required.
  • Communicate project design requirements, progress, and schedules.
  • Assist in identifying key client interests and drivers and communicate them to project team members. Support the development and communication of design standards and process improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and support the training and development needs of supervised personnel.
  • Complete special assignments based on technical expertise.
  • Make presentations and conduct training sessions within a specialized area of expertise.
Skills Required
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience.
  • Proficiency with CAD, BIM, or engineering design software.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Education/Training/Certifications
  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology.
  • Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology.
