Senior Claims Examiner – Commercial General Liability / Public Entity

Salary: $85,000 to $95,000 with exact compensation depending on experience

Job Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Claims Examiner with a strong background in Commercial General Liability, Auto Liability, Property Damage, and/or Bodily Injury claims. These positions are responsible for managing claims from initial assignment through resolution, including investigation, coverage and liability evaluation, reserving, negotiation, and litigation management.

The ideal candidate is a confident claims professional who can independently manage a complex caseload, exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively with clients and attorneys, and develop strategies that lead to timely and cost-effective claim resolution.

Responsibilities

• Handle assigned commercial general liability, auto liability, property damage, and bodily injury claims from inception through resolution.
• Investigate claims and evaluate liability, coverage, damages, and exposure.
• Manage litigated claims and work closely with defense counsel throughout the litigation process.
• Develop appropriate strategies for resolving claims and reducing indemnity and expense exposure.
• Review medical records, legal documents, estimates, investigative reports, and other claim-related information.
• Establish and maintain appropriate reserves.
• Negotiate settlements with claimants, attorneys, vendors, and other involved parties.
• Coordinate litigation activities, including discovery, defense strategy, settlement negotiations, mediations, and other proceedings.
• Maintain accurate claim documentation, diary activity, and file notes.
• Communicate regularly with clients and other stakeholders regarding claim status, exposure, and resolution strategy.
• Prepare claim reports and participate in client claim reviews or roundtables as needed.
• Work effectively with defense counsel, investigators, vendors, subcontractors, and other service providers.
• Maintain compliance with applicable claims handling guidelines, client requirements, and industry best practices.
• Manage a high-volume caseload while maintaining quality, productivity, and timely file resolution.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience handling litigated auto and/or general liability claims; senior-level positions may require 6+ years.
• Experience handling property damage and bodily injury claims.
• Strong litigation and claims management experience.
• Experience handling moderate-to-high severity claims.
• Strong understanding of insurance principles, liability, coverage, damages, and claims procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong negotiation, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to independently prioritize and manage a large caseload.
• Experience using claims management systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• Public entity claims experience.
• Field investigation experience.
• Experience with complex or high-severity liability claims.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Insurance designation such as AIC, AIM, ARM, CPCU, or related insurance coursework.
• Experience working directly with clients and defense counsel.
