Leveraging our 350-year heritage, MSIG USA brings the financial strength, expertise, and global footprint to offer commercial insurance solutions that address your business’s unique risks.

MSIG USA is seeking a highly experienced Senior Environmental Claims Specialist to manage complex environmental, toxic tort, and long-tail liability claims. This role is responsible for handling claims end-to-end—from initial intake and coverage assessment through investigation, strategy development, negotiation, and final resolution.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in environmental law, coverage interpretation, and litigation management, with the ability to develop and execute thoughtful resolution strategies while effectively communicating with internal leadership and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Claims Management & Investigation

  • Manage a portfolio of complex environmental and toxic tort claims, including long-tail exposures
  • Oversee claims from intake through resolution, ensuring timely and thorough handling
  • Conduct detailed investigations, including liability, damages, and exposure analysis
  • Coordinate with external counsel, consultants, and experts on technical environmental matters

Coverage Analysis

  • Analyze and interpret policy language to determine coverage applicability
  • Draft clear, well-supported coverage position letters (including reservations of rights and disclaimers)
  • Evaluate coverage issues related to environmental exposures, bodily injury, and property damage claims

Litigation & Resolution Strategy

  • Develop and implement strategic claim resolution plans, including litigation and settlement approaches
  • Manage litigation in partnership with outside counsel, including strategy direction and budget oversight
  • Negotiate settlements and drive claims toward efficient, cost-effective resolution
  • Provide negotiation directives and authority recommendations aligned with company guidelines

Leadership Communication & Reporting

  • Prepare and deliver presentations to senior management on significant claims, exposures, and trends
  • Provide clear recommendations on reserves, litigation strategy, and settlement positions
  • Maintain accurate and timely claim documentation and reporting

Collaboration & Compliance

  • Partner with underwriting, legal, and risk teams to analyze emerging risks and coverage issues
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal claims handling standards
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of claims processes and best practices

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience handling environmental, toxic tort, or complex liability claims
  • Demonstrated experience managing long-tail claims from intake through final resolution
  • Strong background in coverage analysis and policy interpretation

Education & Credentials

  • Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Technical Expertise

  • In-depth knowledge of environmental law, toxic tort litigation, and liability frameworks
  • Proven ability to draft coverage-level communications and legal correspondence
  • Experience managing outside counsel and litigation strategy
  • Strong negotiation skills with a track record of achieving favorable claim outcomes
