Overview:
Fortiss, LLC is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to join its Legal Department. The Senior Counsel will advise stakeholders and other senior business leaders on employment practices, organizational decisions and proposed changes. The role will also monitor developments in legislation, regulations and case law; prepare legal opinions and other legal analyses; and help ensure that Fortiss and its affiliates’ practices and procedures remain responsive to evolving legal requirements.
As appropriate, the Senior Counsel will independently manage litigation matters from strategy through resolution, work directly with business leaders, negotiate matters on behalf of the Company, participate in investigations and serve as a liaison with outside counsel. In addition, the Senior Counsel will provide training and guidance to business leaders and stakeholders and will play an important role in conflict resolution and mediation. Across these responsibilities, the Senior Counsel will be expected to exercise sophisticated legal judgment while balancing legal, operational and organizational considerations.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the General Counsel, this attorney will focus primarily on two critical areas of responsibility to Fortiss and its affiliates: (1) pre-litigation, administrative, and litigation matters; and (2) California cardroom gambling regulatory compliance. The Senior Counsel will exercise independent judgment and take significant ownership these matters, including:
- Independently manage litigation, administrative claims, regulatory inquiries and audits, internal investigations, wage claims, and related disputes from inception through resolution.
- Develop and execute litigation strategies aligned with the company’s business priorities and risk-management objectives.
- Coordinate with outside counsel when matters require external support.
- Coordinate and advise on federal, state and local regulatory requirements affecting the California cardroom industry, including licensing and operational compliance.
- Provide practical, proactive advice to internal stakeholders on risk management, dispute resolution, and compliance.
- Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures, and programs.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments affecting the organization and recommend improvements to policies, training, documentation, and processes.
This position is on site 5 days a week at the company’s headquarters in Bell Gardens. Hybrid and/or remote work will not be considered.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the California Bar.
- At least seven years of relevant litigation experience, with substantial experience handling employment matters.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cases and files independently, including discovery, motion practice, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trial preparation.
- Working knowledge of California gambling law and regulatory framework or demonstrated ability to develop that knowledge quickly and effectively manage specialized outside counsel.
- Direct client-contact experience and the ability to advise stakeholders and manage matters with limited leadership or partner oversight.
- Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, negotiation, and oral communication skills.
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills, with the judgment to identify material risks and propose practical, business-oriented solutions.
- Initiative, leadership, professionalism, sound judgment, and integrity.
- Willingness and ability to travel in California as business needs require.
- Must pass drug screen and background check.
