Overview This posting is for two (2) part-time (17.5 hours a week) positions. This is a highly customer service-oriented position in which employees should strive to exceed customer expectations. Perform a variety of cleaning, servicing, and stocking duties in University buildings, offices, and laboratories, with an emphasis on customer service, cleanliness, and safety. Participate in the training of new employees. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the Clarkson Community.
Responsibilities • Sweep, mop, strip, and wax floors and vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets in assigned areas as needed • Clean rest rooms, offices, and replenish supplies • Wash windows, walls, and other assigned areas • Use of window pole when required • Pick up trash, empty garbage containers, and remove all trash to the area of disposal • Sanitize trash containers as necessary to meet Health Department requirements • Operate vacuum cleaner, buffer, Hi-speed buffers, shampoo machines, etc. • Set up of tables, chairs, and other facilities for meetings or special events • Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues • Perform custodial duties in kitchen areas • Clean and polish brass, clean chalkboards, drinking fountains, and glass doors • Dust and polish furniture, clean window sills and door moldings • Pack, unpack, and assist in receiving, issuing, and transporting materials; report items needed for reorder and general maintenance of cleaning supply inventory • Assist in transferring furniture and supplies between departments and throughout the campus • Replace light bulbs; maintain building security • Perform minor repairs and installations (i.e., dispensers and ceiling tiles) • Participate in the removal of ice and snow from steps and sidewalks • Assist in picking up trash and debris from outside grounds as required • Shovel snow/sand around buildings • Ability to assist grounds crew on spring cleanup • Clean and maintain apartments and houses owned by the University • Make beds for commencement, alumni, and special programs • Clean laundry areas to include washing machines, dryers, walls, and floors • Wash and dry draperies and curtains; take down and hang draperies and replace pins; clean, oil, and adjust sewing machines • Perform room and building lockup as required and also unlocking where directed • Assist support staff on requests • Pick up and deliver custodial supplies • Basic vacuum cleaner maintenance and filter replacement • Perform life/safety inspections • Provide University Event Support • Live out and make decisions in line with the Clarkson University values in all daily activities while on duty • Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping • Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices, and/or student workers • Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet trade-specific and University standards • Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use • Be responsible for care, cleanliness, and maintenance of assigned vehicle and report all vehicle concerns to appropriate supervisor immediately • Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein • Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff, and students • Encourage and Promote Teamwork • Ability to gain general knowledge of the campus • Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues
Qualifications Minimal Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Experience: Certificates related to custodial/cleaning service work Certificates related to general maintenance Experience: Minimal Experience: One (1) year custodial/cleaning experience Preferred Experience: Four (4) years of experience in the operation of motorized cleaning equipment Four (4) years of general custodial experience
Essential Skills Must have: • Enthusiasm for the job • A customer service approach • Willingness to work in a team environment • Hold a valid NYS driver's license with a driving record acceptable to meet the University insurance standards • Proficient mathematical skills • Problem-solving and analytical skills • Possess general knowledge of the campus layout and building locations • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Strong organizational skills are required • Must be able to function under stressful conditions and/or high volume with short turnaround
