Overview

BigRio is looking for an experienced DBA to join our clients database team, supporting production systems that handle PHI data in the U.S.-based environment. This role will work alongside teammates, taking ownership of Postgres (Linux) and MongoDB environments running on on-premises Windows servers. The ideal candidate brings strong on premise database administration expertise, a security-first mindset for handling sensitive healthcare data, and the ability to proactively support a mid-sized production environment (8–10 systems) with clear, consistent communication.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer and maintain PostgreSQL (Linux) and MongoDB databases supporting U.S.-based production systems.

• Manage on-premises database servers running on Windows infrastructure.

• Ensure PHI data is handled securely and in compliance with relevant data protection standards.

• Implement and maintain best practices for database performance, reliability, and security.

• Support horizontal and vertical scaling strategies as production needs grow.

• Ensure backups are encrypted, secure, and reliably recoverable.

• Support home-grown applications built on ASP.NET, Java, and Python, ensuring smooth database integration.

• Mentor and collaborate with the current Jr. DBA on the team.

• Proactively communicate with stakeholders across 8–10 production environments/systems.

• Partner with the Architect and broader IT team on database design and infrastructure decisions.

Required Experience & Skills

• 8–10 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator.

• Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including administration on Linux.

• Experience administering MongoDB.

• Experience managing on-premises database servers on Windows infrastructure.

• Experience working with PHI or other sensitive/regulated healthcare data.

• Strong understanding of database security best practices, including encrypted and secure backups.

• Experience implementing horizontal and vertical scaling strategies.

• Familiarity supporting applications built on ASP.NET, Java, and Python.

• Strong troubleshooting and performance-tuning skills.

• Excellent, proactive communication skills, with the ability to support multiple production environments.

• Ability to work independently in a remote, contract-to-hire capacity.

Nice to Have

• Experience mentoring or working alongside junior DBAs.

• Experience in a healthcare or regulated industry environment.

• Familiarity with database automation and monitoring tools.

• Experience collaborating directly with architecture/engineering teams on scaling and infrastructure planning.
