Job Details
The Role
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of highly engineered liquid transportation products and related systems.
This position supports new product development, custom engineering, manufacturing efficiency, regulatory compliance, cost reduction, and technical problem-solving throughout the product lifecycle. You will work cross-functionally with Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Sales, Purchasing, Quality, and Service to ensure designs meet customer expectations as well as safety, quality, reliability, and profitability objectives.
What You’ll Do
Lead engineering activities for new and repeat customer orders
Lead the development of new product platforms and significant product enhancements
Serve as the technical lead for complex customer, product, and regulatory projects
Develop 3D models, engineering drawings, specifications, and bills of material
Perform advanced structural, durability, load, and performance analyses
Complete engineering calculations related to structural integrity, pressure, piping, stress, weight, thermal performance, and component sizing
Develop engineering standards, design guidelines, and technical best practices
Drive Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly initiatives
Evaluate materials, technologies, and manufacturing methods that can improve product performance or cost
Lead root-cause investigations involving product failures, warranty concerns, and field issues
Review and approve engineering drawings and technical documentation
Support engineering changes and corrective-action initiatives
Collaborate directly with manufacturing teams to improve fabrication and assembly processes
Work with Sales and customers to develop custom and advanced applications
Mentor and support the development of junior engineering team members
Contribute to long-term product planning and engineering strategy
Engineering & Product Focus
The engineering environment includes:
Structural components and fabricated assemblies
Tank trailers and pressure-containing equipment
Piping systems
Frames and chassis interfaces
Stainless steel fabrication
Welding and forming
Customer-specific mechanical designs
Highly engineered fabricated products
The original description also calls for familiarity with applicable requirements such as DOT/FMCSA, ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1, ASTM, and other product-specific codes and standards.
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline
Relevant engineering experience may be considered in combination with education
Experience designing tank trailers, pressure vessels, process equipment, piping systems, truck/trailer equipment, or other highly engineered fabricated products
Ability to take engineering projects from initial requirements through detailed design and manufacturing
Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals
Proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D engineering drawing systems
Experience performing finite element analysis to validate designs
Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, materials, fabrication, welding, and manufacturing processes
Ability to perform and document engineering calculations
Experience interpreting and applying engineering codes, specifications, and standards
Working knowledge of BOMs, ECO/ECN processes, engineering documentation, and configuration control
Strong problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented mindset
Ability to work effectively alongside manufacturing and operations teams
