Senior Designer, Marketing

This role is to be based near our offices in NYC, L.A., Austin, Chicago, or Oakland.

About Us

We drive intelligent growth for ambitious businesses and leading brands.

Customer understanding is more potent and drives greater value when insights go to work directly within marketing and experience priorities. To give our clients that advantage, we put an insights-driven operating system at the core of our design, go-to-market and digital experience solutions.

Material clients make smarter growth choices because they can see clearly how and when to take the shots that count. Together, we connect consumer intelligence with customer demand generation to build lasting, profitable relationships.

About the Senior Designer, Marketing

This role brings together the conceptual range of an art director and the craft of a seasoned graphic designer, working exclusively on Material's own brand. The Senior Designer owns the day-to-day output of the corporate brand: social imagery and video, presentation decks, website updates, thought leadership content, conference collateral, internal initiatives and branded merchandise. The work runs on taste and precision, with an exacting eye for detail across every surface. Digital fluency is required.

Beyond daily output, the role co-owns how Material's Design Language System gets operationalized: building, maintaining and applying a brand token system engineered for machine readability, so people across the business can prototype and produce on-brand work with AI tools at speed, without senior cleanup at the end.

The right person is a tastemaker and steward of the brand, a thought partner on campaign work and a fast, self-directed designer for whatever the brand needs week to week.

Responsibilities

  • Design and produce the corporate brand's daily output: social imagery and video, presentation decks, website updates, thought leadership content, conference and event collateral, internal initiatives and branded merchandise.

  • Hold a high, consistent standard for craft and detail across every format and channel.

  • Move quickly and independently through a high volume of varied requests without dropping quality.

  • Build, maintain and apply Material's brand token system, structured for machine readability so AI tools and non-designers can query and apply it correctly.

  • Extend and protect the identity system as it reaches Material's IP and products.

  • Work with the brand design team on updates and extensions to the core brand system.

  • Act as a thought partner on campaign concepts, bringing big-picture thinking alongside execution.

  • Develop thoughtful, strategic internal presentations and represent the marketing team with consideration and creativity

Characteristics

  • Thinks conceptually and executes precisely, equally at home pitching an idea and finishing a layout.

  • Exacting about detail and finish, with standards that hold up under volume.

  • Designs systems, not just deliverables, building for reuse and scale.

  • Fluent across static, motion and interactive.

  • Self-directed. Takes direction and runs with it without waiting to be unblocked.

  • Energized by undefined territory and comfortable defining things by doing.

  • A tastemaker, with a clear point of view on where design is going.

  • Shows initiative in maintaining knowledge of industry standards, best practices and emerging trends utilizing the proper tools for measurement and compliance.

  • Protective of the brand and generous in helping others work within it.

  • Takes feedback without ego.

About You

  • 6+ years of design experience spanning brand, marketing and digital, in an agency, studio, consultancy or in-house setting.

  • Expert command of Figma, including variables, components, modes and token-based design systems.

  • Demonstrated experience building or operationalizing a design system or DLS, with an understanding of how design tokens map to machine-readable and developer-facing formats.

  • Outstanding craft and finish across composition, type, color and layout, evidenced in the portfolio.

  • Detailed, current knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).

  • Familiarity with animation/video editing software such as After Effects, Premiere Pro or other video platforms is a bonus.

  • Digital and responsive design fluency, with working knowledge of motion for social and video.

  • Strong conceptual range, evidenced by campaign or identity work, with the ability to discuss your role and the thinking behind it.

  • Comfort with AI-assisted design workflows, or clear enthusiasm to build that fluency.

  • A portfolio spanning brand identity and systems, marketing and social, presentation design and digital.
