Have you previously set and executed a data science strategy that directly impacted business outcomes?

Do you have deep methodological expertise in data science?

About the Role:

The Senior Director of Data Science – Health Markets will lead the entire Health Markets data science team setting strategic direction, owning end-to-end delivery, and ensuring data science investment connects clearly to business outcomes. As the methodological authority for the function, you will raise the standard of data-driven decision making across the entire business unit — not just within your immediate team. You’ll have 6 direct reports and lead a broader team of approximately 20.

Responsibilities:

  • A clear data science strategy for Health Markets, prioritized against business needs
  • Production-grade AI and ML solutions — Gen AI, agentic systems, BERT-type and classical ML models
  • A defined intake and prioritization model to align Health Markets demand with data science capacity
  • Best practices and repeatable frameworks for experimentation, model delivery, and adoption — including mentoring teams to build lasting capability
  • Defined success metrics and value realization approaches for every AI and data science investment, with a clear line from technical output to business impact
  • Active support for discovery efforts — helping Health Markets teams identify and shape AI use cases before they reach delivery
  • A reuse and cross-portfolio coordination roadmap, reducing duplication and increasing speed across the business unit
  • Strong cross-functional partnerships with Product, Engineering, TPM, and Delivery — enabling scalable execution and clear accountability

Experience:

  • Proven track record of taking ML/AI models into production at scale
  • Led large data science teams (circa 20 people)
  • Background in health education, clinical technology, biopharmaceutical, or health information services strongly preferred
  • Experience in product-led organizations; startup exposure a plus
  • Master’s degree in Data Science highly preferred

Skills/Competencies:

  • Deep methodological expertise in data science — able to set the standard and act as the technical authority for the function
  • Strong ML pedigree — NLP, BERT-type models, classical ML in production
  • Hands-on experience with Generative AI; agentic systems desirable
  • Able to engage credibly at both strategic and technical levels
  • Clear communicator — translates complex technical work for non-technical audiences
  • Influences beyond immediate teams — shapes thinking and practice across the wider business unit
  • Thought leader — represents Elsevier’s data science expertise externally with clients and industry
  • Commercially minded — connects data science work to business value
  • Delivery-focused — gets things shipped, not just designed
