Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Finance is FACETS' senior finance leader, responsible for the financial health, integrity, and strategic direction of the organization. This role oversees budgeting, financial reporting, grants and contracts accounting, internal controls, and the annual audit, and serves as the organization's principal advisor on financial strategy and sustainability.
This role combines strategic financial leadership (board reporting, budgeting, financial planning, audit oversight) with direct involvement in the organization's core accounting work and close supervision of the finance team. The ideal candidate has held senior finance leadership responsibility in a similarly sized organization, is comfortable engaging in the details of the organization's finances, and is energized by building strong systems and a strong team in a mission-driven environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Leadership:
- Serve as chief financial strategist and advisor to the Executive Director, Sr. Director of Business Management and senior leadership, translating financial data into clear guidance for organizational decision-making.
- Lead the annual operating budget process and ongoing financial planning, including cash flow forecasting and scenario modeling, in partnership with the Executive Director, Sr. Director of Business Management and department leads.
- Serve as a key liaison to the board finance and audit committee; prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and analysis at board and committee meetings.
- Lead the annual audit and Form 990 preparation, serving as the principal point of contact for external auditors and tax preparers.
- Monitor the organization's cash position, reserves, and investment accounts, and recommend action to protect long-term financial sustainability.
Accounting Oversight & Financial Operations:
- Lead the monthly close, general ledger reconciliations, and financial statement preparation, reviewing and approving the work of the finance department.
- Maintain and strengthen the organization's system of internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
- Oversee grants and contracts accounting, including restricted fund tracking and compliance with government and foundation funder requirements (e.g., 2 CFR 200 for federal awards).
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank/deposit reconciliation functions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness across the finance team.
- Oversee the organization's accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks or comparable platform) and identify opportunities to improve automation, reporting, and data integrity.
Team Management & Development:
- Supervise and mentor finance staff, setting priorities, reviewing work, and building a culture of accuracy and accountability.
- Build out the finance function as FACETS grows, defining roles and recommending staffing and structure changes to the Executive Director and Sr. Director of Business Management.
- Provide budget training and financial guidance to program and department directors to manage their own budget lines.
Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting standards, and all applicable federal, state, and local grant and contract requirements.
- Oversee insurance coverage and other risk-management functions related to the organization's financial and operational integrity.
- Stay current on nonprofit accounting standards and funder compliance requirements relevant to human-services and housing-focused organizations.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
- 7–10+ years of progressively responsible nonprofit or comparable finance/accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior finance role at an organization with a budget in the $5–$15 million range.
- Demonstrated experience with government and foundation grant accounting, including restricted fund tracking and compliance reporting.
- Experience managing and developing finance staff, and building or strengthening financial systems, policies, and controls.
- Comfort working at both a strategic and a detailed level, with a willingness to stay directly involved in the organization's core accounting work.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and strong Excel/financial modeling skills.
- Excellent ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial staff, leadership, and Board members.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with federal, state and county grant and contract requirements.
- Experience supporting or presenting to a board finance or audit committee.
Physical Requirements:
- Primarily an office-based role with occasional local travel for board meetings, community events, and off-site meetings.
- May require occasional flexibility outside of standard business hours to meet deadlines (e.g., month/year-end close, audit preparation, board meeting preparation) and to attend occasional meetings at other FACETS office locations within Fairfax County, including 3 annual organization-wide fundraising events each year.
Pay Range:
Salary Range: $130,000–$140,000 per year, commensurate with experience. FACETS offers a competitive salary commensurate with qualification/experience.
