Provincetown Independent Senior Editor The Provincetown Independent a path-breaking newspaper in one of the most ecologically and culturally complex places in the United States seeks a senior editor who shares our commitment to independent local journalism. The newspaper covers four towns at the tip of Cape Cod Massachusetts in print and online. Provincetown Truro Wellfleet and Eastham occupy a fragile environment much of it protected as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and have a combined year-round population of about 15000 which swells to more than 100000 in summer. This presents challenges to local and regional governments and to the local economy and community life. At the same time this is a place that for generations has attracted creative people who contribute to these communities continuous renewal. Launched in 2019 as a response to corporate consolidation that has left two ghost newspapers behind the Independent has had strong community support and healthy growth and is ready to add an experienced Senior Editor to its team. Were looking for someone who has editing chops wants to be a leader at a smart committed independent local newsroom and has these qualifications • Five years of hands-on experience as a news editor at a daily or weekly publication • Strength in developmental editing and in seeing stories through from conception to final production • Exceptional copyediting skills • Leadership skills especially a commitment to working with inexperienced reporters and helping them excel • Readiness to represent the cause of independent journalism in sustaining democracy. The leader in this job • Works in close collaboration with other editors and reporters to assign and develop features across all departments. • With the editor takes responsibility for all that goes to press top editing and working with production staff to lift the quality of finished pieces and maintain the papers standards and style. Handles corrections when called for. • Assists with obituaries and letters to the editor. • Cultivates and expands the circle of contributors and reporters and contributes to a range of creative projects as needed. Compensation range is 75000 to 90000 commensurate with experience and includes competitive benefits. This role also includes the opportunity to earn equity in the company. The newspapers identity and mission are locally focused so the right candidate must be or become part of the Outer Cape Cod community including living within easy commuting distance of Provincetown.
