Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Electrical Engineer leads the design, analysis, and implementation of medium- and high-voltage (15kV+) electrical utility systems for industrial and utility-scale projects. This role focuses on developing robust power distribution solutions, including substations and utility infrastructure, while ensuring compliance with relevant standards and safety regulations. The engineer provides technical leadership, mentors junior team members, and collaborates closely with project teams and clients to deliver cost-effective, manufacturable designs aligned with customer requirements. Relocation assistance is offered for this position.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of electrical power distribution systems (15kV+), including substations, feeders, and utility interconnections.
- Develop and review single-line diagrams, protection schemes, grounding systems, and equipment layouts.
- Perform and oversee power system studies such as short circuit analysis, arc flash studies, and load flow and coordination studies.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, and detailed construction documentation.
- Support equipment selection, including transformers, switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and protection devices.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure project alignment on scope, schedule, and budget.
- Interface directly with clients to define requirements and deliver clear, technically sound solutions.
- Provide oversight and technical direction for designers and junior engineers, offering mentorship and guidance.
- Review designs for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable industry standards and codes.
- Support construction activities, field troubleshooting, and commissioning efforts as needed.
- Ensure technical accuracy and quality of all electrical design deliverables.
- Develop design standards and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for engineering processes and tools.
- Oversee CAD production, including single-line diagrams, layouts, and detailed installation drawings.
- Participate in project planning, staffing decisions, and execution strategy to meet project objectives.
- Conduct design reviews and enforce QA/QC standards across multiple projects.
- Identify opportunities to optimize system performance, reliability, and overall project cost.
- Work as part of a project team to deliver cost-effective, manufacturable designs aligned with customer requirements.
- Provide regular updates on project status and timelines for completion to stakeholders.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
- 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on utility power systems and distribution design at 15kV and above.
- Strong experience with medium- and high-voltage system design, substations, and power distribution networks.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical design and documentation.
- Deep understanding of NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI standards and their application to utility and industrial power systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering projects from concept through commissioning.
- Proven experience mentoring and providing technical direction to junior engineers and designers.
- Ability to develop and interpret single-line diagrams, protection schemes, grounding systems, and equipment layouts.
- Experience performing or overseeing power system studies, including short circuit, arc flash, load flow, and coordination analyses.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to technical accuracy and detail.
- Effective communication skills for interfacing with clients, cross-functional teams, and project stakeholders.
- Ability to coordinate scope, schedule, and budget across multiple projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with CREO or similar electromechanical design tools.
- Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP or equivalent.
- Background in utility-scale substation and power distribution projects.
- Experience working in industrial facilities or heavy manufacturing environments.
- Exposure to renewable energy integration projects, including solar, energy storage, grid make-ready work, distribution upgrades, and utility coordination.
- Experience with electrical testing and commissioning of power equipment.
- Ability to develop design standards and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices.
- Familiarity with resistive and reactive load banks and their application in testing generators, turbines, UPS systems, and other power equipment.
- Experience collaborating on products that support data centers and other high-demand power applications.
Work Environment
The role is based in a newly renovated office located in close proximity to a manufacturing facility, enabling regular collaboration between engineering and production teams. You will work as part of a project team focused on delivering cost-effective, manufacturable designs that meet customer requirements in industrial and utility-scale environments. The work involves using tools such as AutoCAD, CREO or similar design platforms, and power system analysis software like ETAP. The environment emphasizes technical excellence, quality, and continuous improvement, with opportunities to contribute to innovative load bank products used for testing generators, turbines, UPS systems, and other power equipment, including solutions tailored to the growing data center market. Standard office attire is appropriate, with occasional visits to manufacturing or field sites where appropriate safety gear may be required. The organization offers a collaborative culture with a track record of hiring and supporting engineering professionals, and provides relocation assistance for qualified candidates.
