Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer (Power / Industrial Projects)
Location: Downers Grove, IL
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire

Position Overview
Our client is seeking a talented and self-motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join their engineering team in Downers Grove, Illinois. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex and challenging design projects within the power and industrial sectors, supporting major engineering initiatives and leading multidisciplinary project teams.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in power plant or industrial electrical design, along with the ability to lead engineering teams, coordinate across disciplines, and provide technical guidance throughout project execution.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical engineering design activities for power and industrial projects.

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering activities within the electrical discipline.

  • Oversee and guide engineers and designers to ensure successful completion of project assignments.

  • Develop and review electrical design deliverables including schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line and three-line diagrams.

  • Provide design guidance for:

    • Raceway systems (underground ductbanks, cable tray, above-ground conduit)

    • Lighting systems (interior, exterior, and roadway lighting)

    • Grounding systems

  • Coordinate engineering activities with other disciplines to ensure a complete and integrated design.

  • Review project documents to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.

  • Support constructability reviews and identify interface requirements with existing facilities.

  • Provide field support including site verifications, as-built documentation, and assistance with procurement and installation activities.

  • Participate in client meetings and communicate technical progress to project management and leadership teams.

  • Monitor engineering progress, staffing needs, and discipline budget performance.

  • Assist with project planning, estimating, specifications, requisitions, and quantity takeoffs.

  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff.

  • Support construction, commissioning, and startup activities when required.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university.

  • Minimum 7+ years of electrical engineering design experience on power generation and/or industrial projects.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.

  • Experience leading engineering teams or serving as a lead engineer on complex projects.

  • Strong knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), IEEE/ANSI standards, and NEMA standards.

  • Experience with medium and low voltage electrical equipment and power distribution systems.

  • Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to interact with project teams and senior leadership.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple assignments, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Willingness to travel and support both office and field environments as required.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as a Lead Electrical Engineer on EPC (Engineer-Procure-Construct) projects.

  • 15 20 years of electrical engineering design experience in combined cycle power plants or large industrial facilities.

  • Experience using ETAP or similar electrical system analysis software for system studies and relay coordination.

  • Familiarity with switchyards, large power transformers, generator circuit breakers, and major power equipment.

  • Experience supporting procurement of electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, breakers, and power cables.
