JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Senior Electrician provides advanced-level electrical expertise to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus facilities. This position performs, leads, and coordinates installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of electrical systems, equipment, and infrastructure across academic, research, clinical, and residential buildings. The Senior Electrician interprets complex plans and codes, troubleshoots high-level issues, ensures compliance with NEC and institutional standards, and mentor junior staff. This position is classified as an Essential Services Employee. Essential Services Employees maintain business operations for UT Health Science Center and support the physical operations and safety of the campus. This role involves performing various operations and services essential to maintain critical infrastructure and ensuring continuous operations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of progressively responsible electrical experience, preferably in a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: State issued Journeyman Electrician''s License. Master Electrician License is acceptable (depending on state requirements). Must have a valid Driver's License. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must have ability to lift 75 lbs. and to climb and work from ladders for an extended period. This position requires successful background check and drug screening as a part of the employee screening process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Expert understanding of NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and campus electrical standards.

  • Proficiency with low- and high-voltage systems, switchgear, generators, lighting controls, motors, fire alarm interfaces, and building automation interactions.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical issues in various facility types (labs, classrooms, medical, residential).

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, load calculations, and technical manuals.

  • Skill in CMMS systems, digital testing tools, and work order software.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may frequently be required to work evenings and weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnoses and repairs complex electrical issues across academic, research, clinical, and residential facilities.

  • Maintains panels, lighting systems, emergency power, motors, and distribution equipment.

  • Performs preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure reliability.

  • Installs new electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and control devices.

  • Conducts inspections, testing, and documentation of electrical components and life-safety systems.

  • Maintains accurate records and assists with regulatory audits.

  • Assists with planning, scheduling, and estimating resources for maintenance and project work.

  • Responds to electrical emergencies, power outages, and urgent service requests.

  • Ensures compliance with NEC, OSHA, NFPA, campus standards, safety requirements, and institutional policies.

  • Communicates work impacts and updates to stakeholders to minimize disruption.

  • Participate in after hours on-call rotation to maintain campus safety and continuity.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
