• Travel Requirements: Candidates will be expected to visit substations and participate in field job walks. Frequency varies based on project workload typically once or twice per month, and may increase based on project assignments and field support needs.

Job Summary

This role is part of the Substation Projects group within a major investor-owned electric utility serving approximately 15 million people across a 50,000 square-mile service territory in Central, Coastal, and Southern California. The organization is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States and is actively leading California's transformation to a net-zero economy, investing in grid modernization, energy storage, transportation electrification, and distributed energy resources. The Senior Engineer AutoCAD will manage in-house design projects and prime engineering contractors while providing technical engineering and design support, ensuring consistency, high quality of design, on-time delivery, and cost control. This position is assigned to the Desert / San Jacinto Region and is hybrid with required onsite attendance every Wednesday and Thursday at the Pomona Innovation Center. Candidates should be local to the region they are supporting; managers do not want out-of-state candidates unless relocation is completed and aligns with onboarding timelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop preliminary scope of work; schedule and conduct pre-engineering job walk meetings with stakeholders (Construction, Maintenance, Operations, IT, Telecomm, Field Engineering, Test, etc.)
• Create, approve, and publish pre-engineering job walk meeting minutes and design specification documents
• Order major equipment promptly to meet material want dates
• Manage various in-house design projects by providing technical engineering and design support to the design team as well as providing training and directions
• Manage the prime engineering contractor and work with the contractor to ensure consistency and high quality of design, delivery milestone dates, and cost
• Review, evaluate, and approve engineering contractor design cost proposals on direct award and/or competitive bidding projects
• Participate in the mentoring and training of new engineers as required to help develop the technical expertise of the Substation Projects group
• Review and approve Purchase Order Requests, change orders, and service sheets through the Ariba system
• Provide technical support to field personnel and other internal/external stakeholders and project-related team members as required
• Provide engineering support for ongoing operational needs to support service reliability and meet other related compliance requirements, such as emergent projects and/or stakeholders' requests and emergencies, as well as North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance and reporting
• Create and maintain a safety-conscious work environment by leading and influencing others to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Design Manager, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Required Skills

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, or Bachelor's Degree in a Scientific/Technical/Math field
• Two (2) or more years of experience in substation engineering and design
• General knowledge and experience with guides, standards, codes, and methods to perform complex assignments
• Highly organized, with experience conducting field meetings discussing scope of work and excellent note-taking
• AutoCAD design experience in developing and updating AutoCAD drawings
• Highly organized, with excellent communication skills verbal/written, experience conducting field meetings discussing scope of work, and excellent note-taking skills

Preferred Skills

• Five (5) years or more of engineering experience
• General knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform complex assignments for a specific discipline, various installations, or services
• Professional Engineer License (P.E.) in the State of California
• Power Utility Substation 4KV through 500KV
• Experience with 3D design/modeling tools (team can provide training)
• Background in electrical design, conduit design, grounding design, one-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, or general power engineering concepts
• Experience in related industries such as Oil & Gas, Facilities, Industrial Electrical Design, or other electrical engineering environments

Education Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, or Bachelor's Degree in a Scientific/Technical/Math field (required)
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a Power Engineering focus is the preferred educational background due to the technical nature of the work

Required Experience

• Two (2) or more years of experience in substation engineering and design
• Substation engineering experience is the strong preference and will typically be prioritized; however, candidates with strong electrical design experience and no direct substation background may be considered and trained on substation design work
• Candidates without direct utility/substation backgrounds may still be viable if they have experience with electrical design, conduit design, grounding design, one-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, or general power engineering concepts

Nice-to-Have Experience

• Five (5) years or more of applicable engineering experience
• Project management experience
