Job Description

The Senior Engineering Technician - Extrusions provides advanced technical support to cross-functional engineering and production teams to characterize, develop, and optimize extrusion technology platforms and processes. In this role, you set up, operate, troubleshoot, and clean extrusion manufacturing equipment according to specialized standards, support the commercialization of complex projects, and help transition new processes into production. You work closely with engineers to run extrusion processes, perform in-process testing and quality checks, and ensure a clean, organized work area while maintaining all required documentation.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced technical support for engineering projects and act as a process expert, requiring minimal engineering direction to complete activities.
• Set up, run, and adjust extrusion equipment according to specialized standards on multiple machines and processes, applying advanced knowledge of equipment setup.
• Operate extruders and manage material handling, including weighing and staging raw materials, packaging, and sampling.
• Perform in-process testing and quality checks, examining product for defects and size variations, and accurately complete production documentation.
• Troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems as needed, taking action to ensure quality limits and efficiency targets are consistently met.
• Create draft manufacturing documents such as work instructions, certification checklists, visual aids, setup sheets, and other documentation to establish and record process windows and controls.
• Apply a strong understanding of cause and effect in process development to improve extrusion performance and product quality.
• Provide advanced support for transitioning projects into production, including training manufacturing personnel on new processes and procedures.
• Deliver ongoing engineering support to optimize tooling and production processes, implementing controlled changes within established parameters and process change procedures.
• Provide training and guidance to others based on expertise and demonstrated work performance.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring it is free of foreign debris and meets housekeeping and safety standards.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support engineering, production, and continuous improvement activities.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma is required.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant technician experience.
• Demonstrated experience in tubing extrusion.
• Direct experience participating in complex projects through commercialization.
• Ability to set up, operate, adjust, and troubleshoot extrusion equipment on multiple machines and processes.
• Strong skills in performing quality checks, identifying defects and size variations, and completing production documentation accurately.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.
• Capability to create draft manufacturing documents, including work instructions, certification checklists, visual aids, and setup sheets.
• Solid understanding of cause-and-effect relationships in process development and process optimization.
• Strong problem-solving skills for resolving equipment issues and maintaining process stability.
• Effective communication skills to train manufacturing personnel and share process expertise with team members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Two-year technical degree is strongly preferred.
• Experience with medical multi-lumen extrusion is preferred.
• Experience supporting the transition of engineering projects into full production environments.
• Experience in optimizing tooling and production processes and implementing controlled process changes.
• Ability to move between facilities in Minnesota as required by project and production needs.
• Comfort working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment that emphasizes continuous learning and growth.

Work Environment

This is an onsite role based in Minnesota within a manufacturing and engineering environment focused on extrusion processes for medical devices. You work directly with extrusion equipment, including multiple extruders and associated tooling, and regularly handle raw materials, perform sampling, and conduct in-process testing. The schedule is onsite between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with flexibility on start and end times and a preference for a slightly later start within that window. The environment emphasizes cleanliness and organization, requiring a work area that is free of foreign debris and compliant with safety and quality standards. You collaborate closely with engineers and production personnel in a culture that values curiosity, continuous improvement, and the opportunity to take on challenging, growth-oriented work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Saint Paul, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $67000.00 - $76000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

o 2.5% bonus target, max payout at 4% o PTO - dependent on level but 2 weeks of true vacation (can carry over and it accrues), additional 2 weeks of sick/personal leave (use or lose a year). 11-12 paid holidays o 5% 401k match o Generous medical/dental/vision plan
