Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in working on a wide array of wildlife management and land management tasks on California's Central Coast? This supervisor role is responsible for a staff of 10 people managing approximately 60,000 acres of Ecological Reserves and Wildlife Areas that are mostly open to public access, including hunting. Duties also include a widely varied hunt program and wildlife management tasks on public and private lands throughout the three-county area (San Benito, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo). Responsibilities include overseeing population monitoring for big game and special-status species, hunt planning, the Region's wildlife habitat connectivity program, a heavily used public shooting range on Department lands, and human-wildlife conflict response (including depredation response and investigation); working with the Wildlife Conservation Board and non-profit partners on habitat acquisition and conservation; representing the Department as a Carrizo Plain National Monument managing partner; and managing contracts, grants, and State-owned housing.

Personal Leave Program: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) hours. This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Working Conditions

This position is office-based at the San Luis Obispo Field Office, but also requires working in the field, both alone and with staff. Telework may be available based on Departmental policy and at the supervisor's discretion, up to one day per week. Frequent interactions with the public and the media are required. Travel statewide including overnight and weekend assignments to Department managed lands as required by program needs or emergencies.

Special Requirements

Must be capable of rigorous field work, including long hikes over rugged terrain carrying a heavy backpack in inclement weather, navigating in remote areas off-road, operating vehicles on extremely rugged roads/trails, willingness and ability to travel overnight, willingness and ability to work alongside staff doing manual labor tasks. Must be tolerant of wildlife depredation activities, including euthanasia. Must be supportive of public hunting opportunities. Must be able to communicate effectively in person, virtually, and in writing. Must not be averse to paperwork and writing. Must maintain a positive attitude when dealing with bureaucracy and challenging circumstances.

This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. The selected candidate will be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

The selected candidate may be required to provide transcripts (may be unofficial).
