The UMI Senior Estimator operates with minimal oversight and is responsible for leading accurate and competitive cost estimates. Desired estimating experience includes underground utilities, earthwork, concrete in civil infrastructure projects. A successful candidate has experience performing detailed quantity takeoffs and understanding project plans, specifications, labor requirements, materials, equipment, subcontractor pricing, and production rates to develop comprehensive project estimates and proposals. The Estimator works closely with operations, project management, clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure bids are complete, competitive, and aligned with company objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review project plans, drawings, specifications, bid documents, and contracts.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Prepare cost estimates with minimal oversight.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations.
- Analyze labor productivity, equipment requirements, and production rates.
- Identify project risks, constructability concerns, and potential cost impacts.
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field personnel to develop project execution strategies.
- Prepare bid summaries, estimate reviews, and proposal packages.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs as required.
- Assist with value engineering and alternative construction methods to improve project competitiveness.
- Ensure all estimates comply with company procedures and client requirements.
- Participate in bid review meetings and present estimating recommendations to management.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 3-5 years in applicable experience. Estimating or operations.
- Strong understanding of underground utilities means and methods and workflow. Including equipment selection, trench shoring, backfill methods and materials.
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook and Excel.
- Experience with estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organization, attention to detail and superior communication skills.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Self-perform civil experience is strongly desired.
- Experience estimating civil - earthwork, concrete, roadway reconstruction.
- Knowledge of DOT, municipal, utility, and project requirements.

Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based environment with occasional field visits.
- Frequent computer and document review work.
- Occasional travel to project sites, client meetings, and pre-bid conferences.
- May require additional hours during bid preparation and submission deadlines.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while preparing estimates and reviewing documents.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry plans, bid packages, and office materials up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to walk construction sites and uneven terrain during site visits.
- Ability to safely access active construction and maintenance project locations while utilizing required PPE.
This role requires compliance with all applicable safety regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and Loenbro's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies.
