Salary (DOE): $125k-$155k
Requirements: 7+ Years of Heavy Civil Construction experience on DOT and Sitework projects.
Position Overview:
Lead estimator responsible for producing accurate, competitive bids for heavy civil construction projects including roadway, bridge, sitework, and water infrastructure. Drive takeoffs, pricing, and risk analysis while coordinating with project managers, subcontractors, and owners. Mentor junior estimators and help refine estimating processes and tools to improve win rates and margin performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead end-to-end estimating for heavy civil projects (roadway, bridge, sitework, water infrastructure) from takeoff through bid submission.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs using AGTEK and other takeoff tools and develop complete scope and unit pricing.
- Create, manage, and submit estimates in HeavyBid/HCSS and company estimating systems, ensuring accuracy of labor, equipment, and material costs.
- Perform risk and contingency analysis and document assumptions and exclusions for bid presentations.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to obtain scope clarification, pricing, and subcontract quotes.
- Review plans and specifications for DOT and owner requirements and incorporate permit, testing, and compliance costs.
- Negotiate and manage subcontractor and vendor pricing during the bid process.
- Maintain and update historical unit-cost databases and production rates for estimating consistency.
- Mentor and train junior estimators; conduct estimate reviews and QA/QC prior to submission.
- Support business development by attending pre-bid meetings, preparing proposal narratives, and presenting estimates to owners when required.
- Coordinate with scheduling and operations to ensure constructability and alignment of estimates with planned execution.
- Respond to RFP clarifications and prepare post-bid analyses and lessons-learned reports.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction (roadway, bridge, sitework, water) with proven bid-winning results.
- Proficiency with HCSS, AGTEK, HeavyBid, and common civil estimating tools; strong MS Office skills (Excel, Word).
- Demonstrated knowledge of DOT specifications, permitting, testing requirements, and local construction standards.
- Skilled in quantity takeoffs, unit pricing, production rates, equipment costing, and labor estimating.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills; ability to work cross-functionally and present estimates to owners and internal leadership.
- Experience managing subcontractor procurement and developing supplier relationships.
