Job Details
This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role for an experienced facilities professional, ideally someone with a building engineering background. You will own facilities operations for an 88,000 sq ft headquarters and have overall responsibility for three additional sites, each with a local point of contact. You will manage operating and capital budgets, lead internal staff and contractors, and work with teams across the organization to keep workplaces safe, reliable, cost-effective, and welcoming.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead maintenance, safety, security, and day-to-day facilities operations for the headquarters
Hold overall responsibility for maintaining three additional sites, working with each site's local point of contact
Oversee building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and building automation
Develop and manage annual preventive maintenance schedules for owned and leased properties
Manage operating budgets and capital expenditures, including planning, prioritizing, and delivering building and facilities projects
Monitor commercial leases and work with real estate brokers to evaluate options and negotiate new leases, renewals, and extensions
Manage landlord, vendor, and contractor relationships, ensuring service quality, accountability, and contract compliance
Supervise facilities employees and contractors, including workload planning, coaching, and performance management
Inspect buildings and grounds, prioritize maintenance needs, and keep accurate records of repairs, projects, and vendor performance
Lead office moves, build-outs, and other major facilities projects across all sites
Work with departments across a 400+ person organization and support special projects as needed
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
10+ years of facilities, building engineering, property management, or workplace operations experience
5+ years of management experience overseeing employees, vendors, or contractors
Strong working knowledge of building systems, maintenance, and upkeep
Experience managing operating budgets and capital expenditures for buildings and facilities projects
Experience with owned and leased properties, preventive maintenance programs, and vendor contracts
Strong decision-making, project management, and relationship-building skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ERP or business application experience preferred
Able to work a flexible schedule and travel occasionally
Preferred Qualifications:
Background as a building engineer, chief engineer, or facilities engineer
Master's degree, MBA, or facilities/property management certification (e.g., CFM, FMP, RPA, FMA, SMA)
Experience with building automation systems (BAS/BMS) and CMMS platforms
15+ years of facilities experience and 10+ years of management experience
Experience supporting a multi-site or national organization
Work Schedule: Fully onsite, 5 days per week. Candidates must live within 30 commuting miles of the Northern Virginia headquarters. Travel to the other sites is occasional, mainly for office moves or major projects.
