Senior Facilities Planner / Designer

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Senior Facilities Planner & Designer plays a critical role in supporting the effective planning, utilization, and development of physical facilities that enable exceptional patient care, research, and operational excellence. The Senior Facilities Planner & Designer works across a portfolio of projects and collaborates with stakeholders to ensure facility planning solutions align with institutional priorities and future growth.

UT MD Anderson Facilities Planning, Design and Construction is responsible for evaluating facility utilization, developing space and interior planning solutions, and supporting project implementation across the institution. The Senior Facilities Planner & Designer contributes to strategic planning initiatives, space management, design standards development, and complex project programming efforts. The Senior Facilities Planner & Designer supports a high-volume environment that currently includes approximately 186 project ideas related to patient care and patient support services, representing approximately 33% of all project ideas across planning teams.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Interior/Architectural Designer with 7+ years of healthcare, academic, or research facility design experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field. They possess strong knowledge of healthcare codes and standards, including FGI, NFPA, and ADA, with expertise in specialized regulations such as ACR, USP 797/800, or CLIA preferred. The successful candidate is proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, Vault, Archibus, and PowerPoint, and excels at communicating and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver compliant, innovative design solutions.

Salary Range: $106,500 - $133,000 - $159,500

Typical Work Schedule: Hybrid/Remote, work onsite as needed.

Responsibilities

Programming/Planning

• Develop facilities programming and planning documents for large-scale and complex projects.
• Create comprehensive space programs, conceptual floor plans, and Pre-Design reports.
• Participate in department and division strategic planning and facilities planning initiatives.
• Define project scopes, preliminary budget estimates, and program descriptions.
• Obtain all required approvals to support project development and implementation.
• Pursue educational opportunities that support professional development and continued growth.

Customer Interaction

• Serve as a primary customer contact with minimal supervision.
• Identify, engage, and coordinate project stakeholders throughout the planning process.
• Document key project decisions through detailed meeting notes and communications.
• Educate customers regarding the Facilities Approval Request process and project status.
• Consult with architects, engineers, project managers, and institutional staff regarding applicable codes, policies, guidelines, and regulations.
• Support departments requesting expedited project delivery and planning assistance.

Procurement/Installation/Standards

• Participate in design and construction phases to ensure planning intent and standards compliance.
• Create, coordinate, maintain, and refine institutional design standards programs.
• Review project drawings and submittals and process variance requests.
• Manage project documentation, reports, finish schedules, space reports, meeting minutes, and project files.
• Support regulatory reporting requirements and documentation standards.
• Obtain all necessary project-related approvals.

Space Assignment/Utilization

• Maintain and validate institutional space assignment and utilization data.
• Take initiative to identify and correct space utilization inaccuracies.
• Confirm occupancy records and maintain accurate facility information.
• Conduct surveys, assessments, and evaluations as necessary to support planning efforts.
• Evaluate the effective utilization of space and interior resources across institutional facilities.

Institutional Initiatives & Additional Duties

• Support Facilities Planning, Design and Construction goals and institutional initiatives.
• Provide furniture and equipment planning, procurement, and installation support.
• Maintain furniture and equipment inventories, budgets, requisitions, schedules, and floor plans.
• Coordinate moves, site deactivations, asset transfers, inspections, punch lists, and customer communications.
• Manage work orders and project-related coordination activities with minimal supervision.
• Contribute to larger and more complex strategic and facilities planning projects.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

• Required: Associate's Degree Interior Design, Space Planning, Architecture, Science and/or Clinical discipline.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Interior Design, Space Planning, Architecture, Science and/or Clinical discipline.

WORK EXPERIENCE

• Required: Six years Commercial interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning and/or project management experience. or
• Required: Four years Experience in commercial interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning and/or project management with Bachelor's degree.
• Preferred: Six years of experience in commercial interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning and/or project management. With preferred degree, four years of experience in commercial interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning and/or project management.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION

• Preferred: Registered Architect or interior Designer in the state of Texas.
