The U.S. operation in Lombard, Illinois serves as a technical hub for service, commissioning, training, customer support, and manufacturing activities across North America.

As pro-beam continues to expand its U.S. technical capabilities, we are looking for an experienced Senior Field Service Engineer who can take ownership of complex industrial machinery in the field—from installation and commissioning through troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing service.

Direct electron beam experience is not required. We are particularly interested in experienced Field Service Engineers coming from adjacent technologies such as industrial laser equipment, CNC/machine tools, additive manufacturing, semiconductor equipment, industrial automation, or other sophisticated capital machinery.

Extensive training on pro-beam's electron beam technology will be provided, including training with our technical teams in Germany.

What You'll Do

This is a hands-on machinery service role. You will work directly on complex industrial equipment at customer sites and at pro-beam's U.S. technical facility in Lombard.

You will:

• Install, commission, test, and service complex industrial machinery
• Troubleshoot equipment failures across electrical, mechanical, controls, motion, and process-related components
• Diagnose issues involving PLCs, HMIs, drives, motors, sensors, safety circuits, communication networks, and machine peripherals
• Perform hands-on mechanical troubleshooting, adjustment, repair, and component replacement
• Perform preventive maintenance, system upgrades, and equipment modifications
• Independently work through complex machine failures and determine appropriate corrective actions
• Collaborate with engineering and technical specialists in Germany when additional support is required
• Document service activities, technical findings, repairs, and recommendations
• Train customers and provide technical guidance to other service personnel
• Support equipment, service, and customer projects at the Lombard facility as needed
• Participate in technical training in Germany and develop expertise in electron beam, vacuum, and high-voltage technology

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who has spent significant time working directly on complex industrial machinery and is comfortable being the person responsible for getting equipment running again at a customer site.

This is not a software engineering or PLC programming position. Controls experience is valuable, but the role requires someone who can troubleshoot the machine as a whole—including its electrical and mechanical components.

A strong candidate will bring:

• Several years of hands-on field service, commissioning, installation, or industrial equipment experience
• Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capabilities
• Experience independently diagnosing complex machine failures
• Experience installing and/or commissioning sophisticated industrial machinery
• Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation
• Working knowledge of PLC-controlled machinery; Siemens/TIA Portal experience is particularly valuable
• Experience with drives, motors, sensors, motion systems, industrial communication networks, and machine safety systems
• Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on repair work
• Confidence working directly with customers in demanding service situations
• Ability to troubleshoot independently while knowing when technical escalation is appropriate
• Willingness to travel approximately 50–80% throughout North America
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally for technical training, particularly to Germany
• Valid driver's license

Experience That Transfers Well

You do not need previous electron beam experience to be successful in this position.

We are particularly interested in Field Service Engineers with hands-on experience servicing or commissioning:

• Industrial laser cutting, welding, or processing equipment
• CNC and multi-axis machine tools
• Additive manufacturing equipment
• Semiconductor manufacturing equipment
• Complex automated production machinery
• Motion-controlled industrial equipment
• Vacuum-based equipment
• Other sophisticated industrial capital equipment

Experience with vacuum technology, high voltage, beam technology, or electron beam equipment is a plus, but not required.

Location

pro-beam's U.S. technical hub is located in Lombard, Illinois, and this position will periodically support work and training at the Lombard facility in addition to customer travel.

Candidates based in Illinois or elsewhere in the Midwest are strongly preferred due to proximity to the Lombard facility, but relocation to Illinois is not required. We are open to highly qualified candidates elsewhere in the U.S. who can accommodate the travel and Lombard-based requirements of the role.

Electron beam technology can be learned.

What we are looking for first is an experienced Field Service Engineer who can arrive at a customer site, approach a complex machine methodically, understand how its electrical, mechanical, controls, and motion components work together, isolate the cause of a failure, and take ownership of getting the equipment operational again.
