Senior Finance Generalist, Division of Nephrology

The Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the University of Virginia is seeking a Senior Finance Generalist to join its administrative team. This position is responsible for managing the full scope of daily financial operations across the division's Charlottesville and Lynchburg Community Nephrology sites. The position performs a hybrid of complex finance duties spanning budgeting, financial reporting and forecasting, billing and revenue cycle review, and funding administration. The incumbent works closely with, and under the general direction of, the Division Administrator and the broader division administrative team, operating with a strong degree of independent judgment in interpreting financial data, identifying variances, and recommending corrective action. This is a senior-level individual contributor role distinguished by depth of institutional knowledge, command of UVA financial systems, and the ability to translate complex clinical and academic financial information into actionable guidance for division leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning, Budgeting & Reporting

• Partner with the Division Administrator and division administrative team to prepare the division's annual operating budget and revenue projections across the Charlottesville and Lynchburg sites, including assumptions, growth targets, and risk factors.
• Develop and maintain monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages (budget-to-actual variance, year-end outlook, multi-year trend analysis) for division leadership, the Department of Medicine, and the School of Medicine.
• Build and maintain financial models and dashboards supporting strategic planning, including faculty recruitment pro formas, service line expansion analysis, and multi-year planning workbooks.
• Reconcile non-sponsored research study accounts, identifying revenue/expense variances and working with the administrative team to recommend funding solutions.
• Conduct monthly reconciliations of divisional, gift, and faculty startup/retention/residual accounts to ensure accurate accounting of expenditures in line with spending restrictions and to prevent overages.

Provider Productivity, Compensation & Effort

• Analyze clinical billing and revenue trends to support assessment of provider productivity and reimbursement performance, in coordination with the Division Administrator.
• Support compensation planning, including salary and raise modeling and analysis of outreach or coverage arrangements at affiliated community sites.

Billing, Purchasing & Transactional Oversight

• Serve as a key financial resource for procurement, accounts payable/receivable, and purchasing activity across both cost centers, ensuring compliance with University and UPG policy.
• Review and reconcile departmental accounts and journal entries, identifying and correcting errors and supporting timely, accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
• Act as a resource and informal mentor to other finance and administrative staff within the division, sharing institutional knowledge and best practices.
• Serve as primary point-of-contact, both internally and externally, for questions related to divisional worktag usage and allocation of expenditures against revenue sources.
• Responsible for training other financial and administrative staff on correct worktag usage and disseminating updates, as needed.
• Work in coordination with Grants Administrators on the management of faculty retention and startup packages.
• Prepare monthly account certifications for review and approval by Divisional leadership or faculty, as appropriate.

Strategic & Administrative Support

• Prepare materials for division leadership meetings, including presentations summarizing financial performance and forward-looking outlook.
• Support faculty affairs financial analysis (e.g., compensation benchmarking for retention or recruitment cases) as requested.
• Serve as backup to other fiscal staff within the Department of Medicine as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.

Working Relationships

This position works in close, day-to-day partnership with the Division Administrator and the broader Nephrology administrative team, and regularly collaborates with Department of Medicine finance and administrative staff, the School of Medicine, University Physicians Group, and other division stakeholders. The role does not have direct supervisory responsibility but is expected to serve as a senior-level resource and collaborative partner to other administrative and fiscal staff within the division.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.
• Minimum of five years of progressive finance/accounting experience, ideally within an academic medical center, health system, or higher education setting; equivalent combination of education and experience considered (nine or more years of directly relevant experience may substitute for the degree).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Working knowledge of accounting principles and business processes, including budgeting, procurement, payroll, and financial reporting under GAAP.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret complex financial and productivity data and translate findings into clear recommendations for non-financial leadership.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (modeling, pivot tables, advanced formulas) and proficiency with Word and PowerPoint for executive-level reporting.
• Experience with UVA financial systems strongly preferred, including Workday, Adaptive Planning, and UBI/Qlik; familiarity with physician compensation and clinical billing systems a plus.
• High degree of professionalism, discretion, and judgment in handling confidential faculty compensation, effort, and personnel-related financial data.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, frequent interruptions, and shifting deadlines across two cost centers and multiple stakeholder groups.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting financial information to physician and academic leadership.

Working Conditions

This is primarily a sedentary office role involving extensive use of a desktop computer and standard office equipment. This position does not require offsite travel. Hybrid/remote work arrangements may be available in accordance with departmental policy.

About the Division

UVA Nephrology provides comprehensive clinical care, dialysis services, and transplant nephrology support, with a growing community footprint through Lynchburg Community Nephrology. The division is engaged in active clinical, educational, and research missions within the Department of Medicine and is committed to operational excellence, faculty development, and data-informed administrative practice.

The anticipated salary is $70,000 - $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience and subject to internal equity, market review, job profile alignment, and applicable approvals.
