Position Overview
Silverthorne Advisory Group is seeking an Senior Financial Data Engineer to support Department of War (DoW) financial management initiatives. The Financial Data Engineer will design, develop, integrate, and maintain data solutions that improve financial data quality, reconciliation accuracy, system integration, data governance, and mission-focused financial decision-making.
The successful candidate will apply both technical and functional expertise across the DoW financial management environment. This role will evaluate and structure diverse financial datasets, integrate and interpret information from multiple systems, and develop data solutions that support accurate financial execution and reporting.
The Financial Data Engineer will work directly with clients and stakeholders to define requirements, manage data acquisition activities, develop and validate datasets, and produce reliable, actionable financial data products. This position requires strong data engineering capabilities, financial data expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively within secure environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines and backend data solutions supporting DoW financial management and reconciliation activities.
- Evaluate, analyze, and structure diverse financial datasets to support accurate and complete financial reconciliation.
- Interpret, align, and synthesize complex data from multiple DoW systems and sources.
- Work with WDP/Advana, Foundry, Databricks, and other enterprise data platforms to develop and support financial data solutions.
- Support the integration of financial systems, datasets, and business processes to improve data accuracy and usability.
- Manage the data acquisition lifecycle, including identifying required data populations, sources, data elements, and requirements for developing supporting datasets.
- Collaborate directly with clients and stakeholders to define, refine, document, and implement business and data requirements.
- Engineer backend data solutions and manipulate large datasets using Python, SQL, and related technologies.
- Develop and implement programmatic business rules for data enrichment, cleansing, transformation, validation, and reconciliation.
- Automate recurring data and financial management processes to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Perform data quality assessments and identify discrepancies, gaps, anomalies, and reconciliation issues.
- Apply data governance principles and ensure appropriate security controls and compliance throughout the data lifecycle.
- Support financial analysis, reporting, reconciliation, audit readiness, and financial transformation activities.
- Communicate analytical findings, data quality issues, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support senior leaders and client organizations with accurate, reliable, and mission-focused financial data.
Required Qualifications
- 3–10 years of directly related professional experience.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience evaluating, transforming, and validating diverse datasets for financial reconciliation, reporting, or analytics.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, align, and synthesize complex data from multiple DoW systems and sources.
- Hands-on experience working with DoW financial data, financial management systems, or related DoW business processes.
- Experience with WDP/Advana, Foundry, and/or Databricks in a data engineering, analytics, financial data, or related capacity.
- Experience managing the data acquisition lifecycle, including identifying data populations, requirements, and source systems necessary to build supporting datasets.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with clients and stakeholders to define, refine, and implement technical and business requirements.
- Experience engineering backend data solutions, manipulating large datasets, and automating processes within secure environments.
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Demonstrated knowledge of developing and implementing programmatic business rules for data enrichment, cleansing, transformation, and validation of large-scale financial datasets.
- Experience with public accounting, financial data, federal financial management, financial reporting, or related financial environments.
- Experience applying data governance principles and maintaining appropriate security controls and compliance throughout the data lifecycle.
- Active Secret security clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with WDP/Advana, Foundry, and Databricks, preferably supporting DoD financial data or financial management use cases.
- Experience supporting public accounting, federal accounting, audit readiness, financial reconciliation, or financial transformation initiatives.
- Strong understanding of financial data structures, accounting data, financial transactions, and reconciliation processes.
- Experience integrating data from multiple enterprise financial and business systems.
- Knowledge of federal financial management policies, processes, and reporting requirements.
- Experience developing data pipelines, automated financial analytics, dashboards, data products, or reconciliation tools.
- Experience working with cloud-based data platforms and modern data engineering technologies.
- Strong understanding of data quality, data governance, data security, and financial data controls.
- Ability to communicate complex technical, financial, and data concepts to senior leaders and business stakeholders.
