Description

General Definition of Work

Performs journeyman level mechanical work. Performs diagnostics and completes complicated major repairs that require significant mechanical knowledge and skill, and related work as apparent or assigned. Vehicles are mainly diesel and will include medium to large trucks and off-road construction equipment.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions

  • Completes preventative maintenance services and tune ups

  • Prepares new vehicles for service

  • Repairs air conditioning systems, complicated brake systems such as anti-lock brakes, and other major repair tasks

  • Maintains safe work zones and follows applicable safety policies and procedures

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

Two years experience in the repair of automotive equipment, completion of 10 training courses in automotive repair from a community college, vocational school, or automotive dealer/retailer, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four (4) ASE certificates required to be obtained within two (2) years of employment

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of employment.

  • Must have complete set of mechanics hand tools.

High School diploma/GED strongly preferred, additional ASE certificated preferred, tanker endorsement preferred, additional formal training preferred.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working in high, precarious places, frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
