Senior GL Accountant

ThredUp is looking for a technically savvy, detail-oriented Senior GL Accountant who brings strong accounting fundamentals and a genuine drive to use AI and automation to make Finance faster and smarter. Reporting to the Senior Accounting Manager, you will own core GL responsibilities — journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and close, while actively identifying and leading opportunities to automate manual processes and improve how our team works.

To thrive here, you'll need a solid GL accounting foundation and an automation-first mindset — someone who finishes a manual process and immediately asks how to eliminate it. If you're already experimenting with AI tools in your day-to-day work and can speak to concrete ways you've used them to save time, we'd love to hear from you.

In This Role You'll Get To:
  • Actively participate in the month-end close process, including performing balance sheet reconciliations and documenting drivers of balance sheet and income statement flux analysis
  • Prepare monthly journal entries for fixed assets, prepaids and COGS, expense accruals, and other assets
  • Review executed contracts for accounting treatment, needed expense accruals and spend commitments
  • Participate in technical research, contributing to technical memos and policies as necessary
  • Collaborate with all parts of Finance and business partners (ie. Operations, Engineering) to source accruals and ensure accurate financial statements
  • Support SOX implementation, ensuring that job duties are performed in accordance with ThredUp's SOX controls
  • Proactively identify, develop, and implement process improvements, documenting desktop procedures to achieve efficiencies and scalability
  • Lead the identification and rollout of AI tools, automation platforms, and system integrations that reduce manual effort across Finance — partnering with Fintech and cross-functional teams to drive adoption and ensure controls keep pace with automation
  • Support external audit requirements as required, including assisting with sampling requests and tie out of quarterly reporting
What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • 3+ years of relevant experience, with a blend of public accounting and/or general ledger accounting required
  • Strong knowledge of the U.S. GAAP, with a particular interest in technical areas such as:
    • ASU 350-40 Internal use software
    • ASU 360 Property, Plant and Equipment
  • Experience in e-commerce or retail industry is a plus
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or CPA candidacy strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in accounting and business systems, particularly NetSuite and Coupa
  • Advanced Excel skills required (e.g., PivotTables, VLOOKUP, SUMIF, IFERROR, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted workflows or automation tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, or similar), with a drive to apply them to real accounting problems
  • Self-starter with excellent time management, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • Demonstrated curiosity and drive for continuous process improvement; ability to innovate and simplify complex workflows
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and manage projects effectively
