McPhail Associates provides geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, geo-exchange system design, and contracting support consultation services to architects, owners, contractors, institutions, and developers. Job Summary
 
In this position, you will support the management of our contractor support services department and collaborate with peers on project-related tasks. You will work closely with a dedicated team of engineers, geologists, and scientists on foundation-related construction projects.
 
Our contractor support services focus on the design of excavation support systems, underpinning, bracing, slurry walls, and other geostructural systems. Responsibilities include preparing project proposals and budgets, coordinating field investigations, performing geotechnical and structural analyses, and preparing engineering reports for projects located in the Greater Boston area and throughout the northeast.
 
As a Senior GeoStructural Engineer/Project Manager, you will work alongside a similarly educated and experienced Senior GeoStructural Engineer/Project Manager, to mentor and oversee geotechnical design staff, support in-house collaboration and conduct detailed review of design submittals.
 
Responsibilities
 
  • Perform and review geotechnical/structural analyses and calculations.
  • At times perform, and at times oversee, preparation of designs involving temporary and permanent excavation support systems, pile load test reaction systems, foundation piles, construction dewatering, slope stability, and underpinning.
  • Prepare and review project proposals and budgets.
  • Plan and execute subsurface exploration programs.
  • Make regular site visits to ongoing construction projects.
  • Prepare and review geotechnical/structural-related engineering reports, specifications, and drawings.
  • Review contractor submittals.
  • Interact and communicate with staff, clients, and subcontractors.
 
Qualifications and Skills
 
  • Master’s degree with focus on geotechnical or structural engineering is required.
  • Professional Registration (PE) required, Mass. PE preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience is preferred.  
  • Minimum of 1 - 3 years of previous experience monitoring subsurface explorations and/or foundation-related construction involving earth retention systems in the field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience performing earth support design, geostructural analysis, and other related tasks is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with the training, oversight and management of less experienced geotechnical staff.
  • Strong structural engineering skills (structural analysis and steel design) are preferred.
  • Experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring projects involving both overhead and underground engineering systems.
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and detail oriented.
  • Possess ability to maintain effective working relationships with project managers and contractors through clear communication and accurate detailed reporting.
  • Current 10-hour OSHA Construction Industry Training or 40-hour HAZWOPER training is preferred, but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with Bluebeam Revu, PLAXIS, LPILE, CT Shoring, Settle3D, Slide2, MathCAD, MODFLOW, Blastware, GRLWEAP, and/or Shake is preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license with reliable daily transportation.
  • Ability to travel to project sites throughout New England.
  • The position requires individuals to work in potentially dangerous surroundings, sometimes in inclement weather conditions including rain. You must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
