Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to provide technical leadership for geotechnical engineering activities supporting heavy civil infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will work closely with estimating, preconstruction, engineering, project management, and field operations to develop practical, cost-effective foundation and earthwork solutions for transportation, bridge, marine, utility, tunneling, and other civil infrastructure projects.
Job Description:
Plan, direct, and interpret subsurface investigations, laboratory testing programs, and geotechnical field explorations.
Develop geotechnical reports, engineering analyses, and design recommendations for:
Deep and shallow foundations
Earth retaining structures
Ground improvement
Embankments and fills
Excavation support systems
Slope stability
Pavement subgrades
Settlement analyses
Perform engineering analyses using industry-standard software and analytical methods.
Review contract documents, geotechnical baseline reports, and geotechnical data reports during estimating and project pursuit phases.
Identify geotechnical risks and develop mitigation strategies to improve constructability and reduce project uncertainty.
Provide technical input during proposal development, value engineering, and alternative technical concepts.
Support construction teams with foundation installation, earthwork operations, dewatering, instrumentation, and monitoring.
Review contractor submittals, temporary works designs, and specialty engineering calculations.
Coordinate with structural, civil, transportation, environmental, and construction engineering disciplines.
Manage geotechnical consultants, drilling contractors, testing laboratories, and specialty subcontractors.
Participate in project planning meetings and provide engineering recommendations to field personnel.
Conduct site visits to evaluate field conditions and troubleshoot geotechnical issues during construction.
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, project specifications, quality standards, and applicable building and transportation codes.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical development within the engineering team.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or related from an accredited institution required and 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience supporting heavy civil or infrastructure projects. Master's degree preferred.
Professional Engineer (PE) license required; NY and NJ
Experience working for a general contractor or construction engineering organization strongly preferred.
Demonstrated expertise in:
Foundation engineering
Earthwork and embankment design
Retaining structures
Temporary works
Excavation support
Ground improvement
Geotechnical risk assessment
Experience supporting design-build projects preferred.
Strong understanding of AASHTO, FHWA, DOT, OSHA, NYCBC, and applicable geotechnical design standards.
Experience with large transportation, bridge, marine, rail, airport, tunnel, dam, or utility infrastructure projects.
Familiarity with BIM and digital engineering workflows.
Experience with instrumentation and performance monitoring.
Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and external consultants.
Strong understanding of AASHTO, FHWA, DOT, OSHA, and applicable geotechnical design standards.
Proficiency with geotechnical engineering software such as GEO5, gINT/OpenGround, PLAXIS, GeoStudio, LPILE, SHAFT, or equivalent.
Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
