Job Description

Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Principal

Full-Time | Base Salary: $145,000–$200,000

Put your experience at the center of important project decisions.

A multidisciplinary consulting practice is looking for an experienced geotechnical engineer who can bring sound technical judgment, guide project teams, and build strong client relationships.

This role offers a balance of engineering, project leadership, and business development. You will have the opportunity to tackle complex ground-related challenges, help younger engineers develop their skills, and contribute to the direction of the practice.

Your Role

You will oversee geotechnical assignments from initial scoping through technical delivery, helping clients understand site conditions, evaluate risks, and move projects forward. Alongside managing your own work, you will provide senior review and guidance to other engineers.

The position can accommodate different levels of seniority, with title and scope determined by your background and the needs of the team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Directing several projects and client engagements simultaneously, including scope, contracts, and coordination.

  • Developing engineering analyses and recommendations that address challenging subsurface conditions.

  • Producing clear technical documentation that connects engineering findings to project decisions.

  • Reviewing staff calculations, reports, and construction-related documentation.

  • Coaching engineers and providing day-to-day technical and supervisory support.

  • Maintaining productive relationships with clients, project partners, and internal teams.

  • Helping pursue new assignments through proposals, presentations, and client conversations.

  • Supporting consistent technical quality and safe working practices.

  • Coordinating with colleagues in other offices and traveling when projects require it.

Experience That Would Translate Well

We are interested in engineers with substantial consulting experience who are comfortable taking ownership of technical work and guiding others.

The qualifications include:

  • Approximately 14 or more years of experience in geotechnical engineering.

  • Undergraduate preparation in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis, supported by a graduate degree in geotechnical or geological engineering.

  • An active PE license in the state of the hiring office.

  • A background in staff supervision, technical mentoring, and senior review.

  • The ability to explain complex findings clearly in writing and conversation.

  • Strong organization, analytical judgment, and independent decision-making.

  • A collaborative approach to working with clients and colleagues.

  • Comfort using standard office software to prepare reports, calculations, and project materials.

Some assignments involve site visits and travel, including work outdoors on uneven ground and in changing weather. Candidates must meet driving requirements, be able to obtain access to restricted project facilities, and perform the physical activities associated with fieldwork, including handling equipment or materials weighing more than 30 pounds.

What Makes This Worth Exploring

A voice in the work: Bring your judgment to consequential technical decisions and help guide how projects are delivered.

Room to lead: Develop engineers, strengthen client relationships, and contribute to the practice beyond individual assignments.

A mix of responsibilities: Combine technical problem-solving with project oversight and opportunities to help win new work.

Projects with purpose: Support infrastructure and environmental assignments that serve communities and address difficult site conditions.

Compensation & Support

The base salary range is $145,000–$200,000, with compensation and title aligned to experience and responsibilities.

The overall package includes:

  • Opportunities to participate financially in the firm’s success.

  • Retirement savings support with employer contributions.

  • Health coverage options for employees and eligible family members.

  • Insurance and tax-advantaged accounts to support personal and family needs.

  • Paid time away for vacation, holidays, illness, and qualifying family or personal circumstances.

  • Resources for professional development and continued education.

  • Employee wellness and assistance programs.

Additional details can be shared during a confidential conversation.
