Distinguishing Features of the Class

An incumbent, on as assigned shift, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a large housing project including various types of heating systems. Work involves the application of technical knowledge and mechanical skill to solve various operating problems of heating systems. In the absence of management and/or a Chief Housing Project Engineer the Senior Housing Project Engineer exercises independent judgment in accordance with established policies. Work is performed under general supervision and direct supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

On an assigned shift, directs the operation and maintenance of steam boilers, pumps, stokers and related boiler room equipment;

Supervises the firing of boilers, removing the ashes, etc.;

Makes periodic inspections of boiler room and other related boiler room equipment;

Assigns men to, or personally takes charge of emergency, mechanical, plumbing, steamfitting and electrical repairs;

Prepares boilers for inspection;

Maintains daily log of operations;

May be required to drive to and from various work sites;

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Promotional

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Second Class Engineer-Custodian, Second Class Stationary Engineer, Junior Housing Project Engineer, First Class Engineer-Custodian, First Class Stationary Engineer, Senior First Class Stationary Engineer for one year.

Special Requirements

(1) Possession of a current First Class Stationary Engineers License issued by the City of Buffalo in accordance with City Ordinances, which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.

(2) Possession of a current New York State Drivers License, which must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
