Faculty and staff members are expected to be physically present on campus as needed to support the in-person educational experience and on-campus vitality at the University of West Georgia. Depending upon teaching assignments and student demand, this could include the Carrollton or Newnan campuses.

Job Summary

The Senior Internal Auditor plans and conducts complex operational, financial, compliance, and investigative audits under the general direction of the Director of Internal Audit. This position evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, risk management practices, governance processes, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures across UWG operations. The Senior Internal Auditor independently performs audit engagements from planning through reporting, analyzes financial and operational data, and develops practical recommendations to improve efficiency, accountability, and internal controls. The position communicates audit results to management in a clear and professional manner and may be called upon to provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced auditors. The Senior Internal Auditor also supports advisory initiatives, fraud risk assessment activities, and continuous improvement efforts while maintaining compliance with professional internal auditing standards and ethical practices.

Responsibilities

Plans and conducts operational, financial, compliance, and investigative audits using a risk-based approach. Evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, governance practices, and risk management processes. Identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiency, compliance, and safeguarding of UWG assets.

Develops audit programs, performs audit testing, and prepares comprehensive audit workpapers. Analyzes complex financial and operational data using data analytics techniques.

Prepares clear, concise audit reports that communicate observations, risks, and Presents audit results and recommendations to management in a professional and collaborative manner.

Assists with fraud risk assessments, investigations, and special projects. Maintains knowledge of professional auditing standards, higher education risks, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Bachelors degree in Accounting or related field is required. Certification as a CPA, CGAP or CIA, or similar is required.

Required Experience

Five or more years of experience in auditing, public accounting, or governmental accounting is required.

Proposed Salary

$63,548 - $90,900 annually. Paid on a monthly basis.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES

Ability to exercise sound professional judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate integrity and professionalism in all situations. Ability to independently plan and execute audit engagements from planning through reporting and follow-up. Ability to adapt to changing priorities, technologies, regulatory requirements, and organizational needs. Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and promote effective internal controls and operational efficiency. Ability to present findings and recommendations confidently and professionally to management and other stakeholders.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Global Internal Audit Standards. Knowledge of internal controls, risk assessment methodologies, governance processes, fraud risk concepts, and regulatory compliance practices. Working knowledge of data analytics, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word. Familiarity with higher education operations, business processes, and regulatory environments is preferred.

SKILLS

Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess complex processes, identify risks, and develop practical recommendations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical and non-technical information to diverse audiences across the University of West Georgia and the University System of Georgia. Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to work collaboratively while maintaining professional independence and objectivity. Proficiency in conducting research, analyzing data, preparing audit documentation, and drafting concise and meaningful audit reports.

Phyisical Requirements: Office Environment - Work normally performed in a typical interior work environment.
