Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Senior International Student Advisor is a key part of Global Carolina's International Student and Scholar Support office. This position serves as the primary advisor to the F-1 and J-1 international student population on the subjects of maintaining immigration compliance as well as international travel, full-time enrollment, work authorization, and program extensions. This position also focuses on employment authorization education through the facilitation of employment workshops and serves as a liaison with campus partners to ensure international student needs are met in a timely manner.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Banner, Ellucian software, and SEVIS databases.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with diverse clientele of a predominantly non-native English-speaking population
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word and Outlook, with a strong working knowledge of Excel

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong word processing skills
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize competing tasks
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with the general public and as a team member
  • Ability to handle public inquiries effectively and communicate with culturally diverse clientele

Job Duties

Job Duty

Coordinates post-admission, pre-arrival services for newly admitted international students. Plans, schedules, and delivers pre-arrival orientations for incoming international students. Reconciles international student registration records between Banner and Via database systems. Communicates and collaborates with campus academic departments and offices as well as with government agencies to provide support for the incoming international student population.

Plans and delivers CPT and OPT employment authorization workshops throughout the year. Assists ISSS staff with a variety of collaborative projects focused on international student community building and well-being.

Participates as needed in all other oce activities, programming, and administrative support as assigned.

Enters data into the SEVIS database for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program and issues immigration documents for incoming and continuing students and affiliates. Assists with verifying lawful presence of non-citizen students using the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's SAVE database in compliance with South Carolina law. Maintains accurate student information within the ISSS database. Under the supervision of the Senior Manager for SEVIS Compliance, monitors and updates SEVIS data as needed and supports general SEVIS registration responsibilities twice per academic year.

Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for an international student cohort. Processes academic program extension requests, CPT, OPT, and COS applications, SAVE verifications, and provides other immigration advising services based on federal and state regulations and institutional policies. Communicates effectively with other advisors to enhance the advising process and ensure consistency.
