General Information & Responsibilities

The Senior IT Systems Engineer serves as the primary technical lead and owner of the College's enterprise infrastructure and core technology platforms. This role is responsible for the design, architecture, implementation, and lifecycle management of critical systems, including Microsoft 365, Active Directory and Entra ID, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, endpoint management platforms (Microsoft Intune and SCCM), Linux and Windows systems, VMware infrastructure, and VMware Horizon virtual desktop environments.

The position ensures the reliable and secure operation of these systems within a complex, multi-campus environment and serves as a senior technical resource and escalation point for advanced infrastructure and system integration issues.

Description of Duties

  • Designs, implements, and maintains infrastructure and platform solutions to support College systems and applications, ensuring effective integration across platforms and alignment with operational needs.
  • Manages and maintains the College's Microsoft 365 tenant, ensuring reliable operation, security, and performance of cloud services and applications.
  • Manages and maintains the integration of the College's Active Directory and Entra ID environment with other systems, ensuring accurate data flow and directory integrity.
  • Administers identity and access management processes, including authentication, automation, account creation, provisioning, permissions, and privilege management to ensure secure and consistent user access.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates the installation and implementation of hardware and software systems, including managing maintenance windows and system changes in coordination with cross-functional teams and in alignment with established guidelines, to ensure timely completion and minimal disruption to College operations, including work performed outside standard business hours as required.
  • Designs and integrates cloud-based solutions within a complex multi-platform computing environment.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the College's desktop and administrative systems, including associated cloud integrations, to support system compatibility and integration.
  • Monitors, documents, and communicates environmental and physical data center conditions across all sites to support system stability and continuity.
  • Serves as team lead for the College's virtualization resources in developing standard configurations and maintaining monitoring systems to ensure a consistent high availability service level.
  • Develops, implements, and tests business continuity and disaster recovery procedures for supported systems, in accordance with established guidelines and the College's Business Continuity Plan, to ensure protection and recovery of critical systems and data.
  • Monitors infrastructure and endpoint systems, identifies security and performance issues, and implements corrective actions to maintain system reliability and integrity.
  • Utilizes tools and methods to monitor infrastructure conditions, identify potential security risks, and report findings to IT leadership and the Security Team, with issues escalated in accordance with established procedures.
  • Coordinates team assignments and provides technical leadership as required to support infrastructure operations and initiatives.
  • Serves as a District-wide technical resource for secure mobile and remote computing, including remote access, endpoint provisioning, and data communications.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation for infrastructure systems, platforms, configurations, and operational procedures; assists with additional documentation as needed to support system reliability and continuity.
  • Administers, develops, and maintains backup and recovery processes for enterprise systems, including performing, monitoring, and verifying backups to ensure data integrity and recoverability; evaluates and recommends improvements to maintain alignment with current technologies and industry practices.
  • Utilizes privileged access to College systems and data in accordance with position requirements and for authorized job-related purposes only.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality with respect to College records and reports which are prepared, maintained, or utilized by the Board of Trustees or College Administrators in connection with labor relations and collective bargaining.
  • Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:

  • Utilizes hands-on experience in the installation and support of server hardware and related infrastructure, including troubleshooting and repair of network equipment as needed to maintain system operations.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of frameworks supporting the installation and upgrade of databases and related business system applications; assists in troubleshooting and resolution of associated issues.
  • Applies working knowledge of College operating systems and hardware platforms to support infrastructure performance and compatibility.
  • Evaluates system and software needs in collaboration with stakeholders, researches viable solutions, and supports implementation of selected technologies in alignment with operational requirements.
  • Assists in the evaluation and recommendation of technology solutions, including gathering quotes for hardware and software, and providing input to support procurement decisions.
  • Assists IT leadership and the Security Team with security-related activities involving managed systems, including supporting incident response, investigations, and remediation efforts to protect infrastructure systems.
  • Travels as necessary to support district-wide infrastructure projects, installations, and operational needs.
  • Serves as a backup resource to senior network roles, supporting continuity of operations across infrastructure domains.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required. Major in computer-related field preferred. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree and a minimum of two years experience as a systems administrator may be substituted.
  • At least two years experience with Windows Active Directory, Cisco Networking, Firewall management, and Linux experience preferred.
  • CompTIA Security+, Network+, Linux+, or any Operating System certifications from the following vendors: Microsoft and/or RedHat preferred.
  • System analysis or design experience within integrated applications systems required.
  • Demonstrated competency with Windows, Access, and a relational database language required.
  • Demonstrated competency with Oracle, SQL Server, HTML, Visual Basic, and Web design tools desired.
  • Team leadership experience preferred.
  • Virtualization experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
