We are currently seeking a Senior IT Systems Engineer to support a federal client in Washington, DC. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining secure hybrid infrastructure environments, integrating cloud and on-premises systems while ensuring compliance with federal security standards. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer—not a help desk technician—with strong experience in systems engineering, security integration, and federal compliance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and manage hybrid IT infrastructure spanning on-premises and cloud environments
  • Administer and optimize Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and identity platforms including Entra ID and Active Directory
  • Engineer, maintain, and secure virtualized environments using VMware technologies
  • Integrate and manage network and security solutions leveraging Cisco technologies
  • Implement system hardening and security controls in alignment with STIGs and federal requirements
  • Perform patch management, vulnerability remediation, and system updates across enterprise environments
  • Ensure systems comply with FISMA and other federal cybersecurity standards
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to integrate security into system architecture and operations
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and performance issues across hybrid environments
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, architecture diagrams, and standard operating procedures

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field is preferred; A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Six plus (6+) years of experience in IT systems engineering within a federal environment (not help desk or desktop support role)
  • Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., AZ-104, AZ-305, or equivalent)
  • VMware certifications (e.g., VCP or equivalent)
  • Proven experience managing hybrid environments (cloud + on-premises infrastructure)
  • Hands-on expertise with:
    • Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365
    • Identity management (Entra ID / Azure AD and Active Directory)
    • VMware virtualization platforms
    • Cisco networking and infrastructure technologies
  • Experience with patching, system hardening, and applying STIGs
  • Strong understanding of FISMA compliance and federal IT security requirements
  • Ability to design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable systems
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills
  • An active Public Trust or had one in a recent position
  • Requires US Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal agencies or government contracting environments
  • Familiarity with automation or scripting (PowerShell, Python)
  • Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and continuity planning
  • Exposure to cloud security and zero-trust architecture principles

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Full-time, on-site role based in Washington DC.
  • Travel may be required based on project and stakeholder needs.
