Duties Description This Senior Laboratory Equipment Designer (SLED) position in the Bureau of Air Quality Surveillances (BAQS) Northern Monitoring Section is an integral part of a team that maintains the New York State air monitoring network. The SLED is a supervisory position that schedules and oversees the work of lower-level staff with responsibilities for the design, operation, maintenance, and repair of air quality monitoring equipment as well as the review and verification of air quality monitoring data, and evaluation of QA/QC procedures and system operational parameters. Other tasks include the oversight and management of air monitoring stations including siting, construction and electrical communication connection through hands-on and supervision of lower-level staff. The SLED also develops and designs operational procedures for complex electronic equipment and support systems, prepares written correspondence and reports, and works with research staff to assist in the development of papers and presentations. The SLED is responsible for ordering parts and supplies and maintaining proper recordkeeping for the purchasing system.

Additional responsibilities include the design, construction, troubleshooting and repair of air monitoring equipment to support New York State's air monitoring network, including but not limited to:

  • Designing and ensuring the reliable operation of equipment installed at monitoring sites, including the performance and documentation of quality assurance and quality control checks on all air quality monitoring equipment at monitoring sites.
  • Maintenance, repair, and oversight of air monitoring operations at air quality monitoring stations throughout the monitoring network including the calibration, maintenance and repair of intricate electrical and electronic instruments used by research and engineering staff including microprocessors based on telemetry, ambient air monitoring instrumentation, and records.
  • Installation of sampling equipment and collection of air samples for continuous and manual air monitoring, including special studies. Evaluation of air monitoring data from monitors and special air studies confirming data availability and accuracy to ensure the proper operation of equipment.
  • Working with research and engineering staff to develop and operate air monitoring systems and solve complex problems associated with them. Evaluation and testing of various types of air sampling equipment for application and use in special studies or improving existing operations.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and operation of activities associated with special air monitoring projects, documenting and recording all activities, observations and test results for future reference.
  • Provide physical and technical assistance to field technicians and laboratory staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Must have the ability to design and manufacture highly complex electronic devices and equipment for research and clinical work and be capable of repairing, calibrating, and maintaining such precision electronic devices.
  • Must be capable of handling the standard tools of electricians
  • Must have good supervisory and communication skills
  • Must be able to drive a truck or van and be capable of loading and unloading vehicles
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment
  • Must be able to operate a computer and possess knowledge of required technical computer programs
  • Must be able to write correspondence and reports
  • Must be able to climb ladders, scaffold, and work at heights

Minimum Qualifications High School diploma and six years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use; or Bachelor s Degree with specialization in machine design and two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Telecommuting may be available up to 50% of work schedule, will be discussed at interview.
