Role Overview
Reports to: Senior Director, Compliance Counsel
The Senior Manager, Business Partnership & Compliance Operations serves as the primary compliance business partner for BioMarin’s Commercial and Medical Affairs teams, as well as other cross-functional stakeholders. This role is responsible for helping business teams navigate compliance requirements in a practical, risk-based manner while supporting the successful execution of business strategies, initiatives, and day-to-day operations.
As the lead compliance representative supporting business execution, this position translates complex compliance expectations into clear, actionable guidance that enables informed decision-making and operational effectiveness. The Senior Manager partners closely with stakeholders across Commercial and Medical Affairs to review initiatives, provide real-time counseling, support compliant interactions with healthcare professionals and patients, and ensure alignment with applicable laws, regulations, industry standards, and internal policies.
This role combines strategic business partnership with hands-on compliance program execution. The successful candidate is a collaborative and solutions-oriented professional who builds credibility through sound judgment, responsiveness, and practical guidance. They are comfortable working in a matrixed environment, influencing decisions without direct authority, balancing business objectives with compliance obligations, and proactively identifying opportunities to strengthen compliant business practices and operational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Business Partnership & Compliance Advisor
- Serve as the primary day-to-day compliance business partner for Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Patient services and other cross-functional stakeholders.
- Provide practical, timely, and business-focused compliance guidance that supports compliant execution of strategic priorities and operational activities.
- Build trusted relationships with business leaders by offering clear, solutions-oriented recommendations that balance compliance requirements with business objectives.
- Provide real-time guidance on commercial activities, field engagement questions, medical activities, scientific exchange considerations, stakeholder interactions, customer engagements, and business initiatives.
- Partner with brand teams, Medical Affairs leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders to review proposed activities and identify compliance considerations early in the planning process.
- Advise stakeholders regarding appropriate interactions among Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Patient Services and other functions.
- Interpret and apply healthcare compliance requirements, company policies, and industry standards in a practical manner that supports business objectives while appropriately managing risk.
- Facilitate discussions regarding compliance considerations and risk mitigation approaches while helping teams identify compliant paths forward.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and proactive compliance through ongoing stakeholder engagement and trusted business partnership.
Policies, Procedures & Business Guidance
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of compliance policies, procedures, guidance documents, FAQs, and business-facing tools.
- Translate compliance requirements into practical guidance that supports consistent decision-making and compliant business execution.
- Develop and maintain account team guidelines addressing roles, responsibilities, and appropriate interactions among Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Patient Services, and other functions.
- Coordinate communications regarding new or updated compliance requirements, policies, and business processes.
Compliance Program Operations
- Support day-to-day execution and continuous improvement of the Corporate Compliance program.
- Coordinate compliance initiatives, operational processes, and cross-functional projects that support business objectives and compliance expectations.
- Develop and maintain practical tools, resources, and documentation that enable consistent application of compliance requirements.
- Promote operational consistency across compliance programs, processes, and stakeholder interactions.
- Maintain awareness of evolving healthcare compliance requirements, industry standards, and enforcement trends to support effective program implementation.
Training Delivery & Reinforcement
- Deliver live compliance training sessions to business stakeholders as part of established compliance education programs.
- Support compliance onboarding for new employees and business team members.
- Facilitate refresher training and targeted educational sessions addressing emerging business needs and compliance considerations.
- Review training content and provide business-focused recommendations to enhance practical relevance and effectiveness.
- Reinforce key compliance expectations through coaching, business engagement, and ongoing communications.
- Support creation and dissemination of tools and resources that promote continued learning and knowledge retention.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
- J.D. preferred
Experience
- 6-10 years of experience in pharmaceutical/biotech/healthcare compliance, legal, or regulatory roles; pharma experience preferred
- Experience serving as a compliance business partner supporting Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, or other business-facing functions.
- Experience in-house, at a law firm, consulting firm, or regulatory agency preferred
- Familiarity with Commercial and/or Medical Affairs activities required
