As part of the World Wide Engineering & Innovation (WWEI) org, we are seeking a customer focused leader to lead the Planning, Strategy, Launch, and Expansion of the North American Sort Center network. This Sr. leader will lead the Engineering roadmap for the 120+ site sort center network planning through strategic planning of major capacity and automation initiatives. This role partners with internal and external cross-functional teams to transform high-level objectives across capacity, non-capacity, and productivity initiatives, encompassing long-term planning build requirements and comprehensive capital justifications that enable programmatic actualization.

The leader manages programs from initial conception through go-live with end-to-end schedule, quality, and ownership, ensuring alignment across planning and execution goals. The role creates cohesive, actionable plans that drive informed network investment decisions across six integrated functional areas: Build Plan 3YF+, Infrastructure Strategy & Asset Management, OP/SPS Planning Cycles, Post-Beta Pilot Network Rollouts, Innovations & Expansions, and Network Initiatives.

This position oversees network-wide capacity build plans, multi-site engineering initiatives for network optimization, strategic automation expansions, programmatic funding support for Alpha/Beta pilots, and comprehensive asset portfolio management including hibernations, operational exits, transfers, lease decisions, and network strategy integration.

Key job responsibilities

This leader will lead comprehensive 3-year+ capacity planning for the Sortation network, managing programs from initial conception through go-live with downstream end-to-end program management. This includes leading capital funding approval processes, securing capital funds with rigorous business case development, and driving project execution from conception through CAR funding approval for new launches, retrofits, and capacity initiatives.

The leader will establish governance frameworks to reduce supplemental funding requests (10% YoY) through improved estimation accuracy and spend controls, while managing cross-functional coordination bridging planning and execution teams, identifying and mitigating project risks. The role oversees comprehensive asset management synthesizing engineering strategies with long-term planning outlooks, including strategic property portfolio management for lease renewals, exits, and standardization initiatives.

The leader manages innovation network deployment, driving tactical implementation planning, CAR funding justification, and standardized deployment strategies. This leader manages comprehensive OP1/OP2/SPS planning cycles integrating inputs from various organizations across capacity and non-capacity initiatives, synthesizing complex requirements into cohesive senior leadership level documentation.

This role ensures launch and expansion quality meets >90% launch quality targets across execution and operational metrics, through cross-functional mechanisms with granular critical path milestone tracking. The role drives SLA accountability and risk management with commitment to dates and zero project level delays, while leading and developing a team of engineering managers and program managers across functional areas, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, data-driven decision making, and end-to-end ownership.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
