About the companyOur client is a firm with offices in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and New York, building out an Azure-based automation platform and the engineering team behind it. The team is growing, with a strong focus on mentorship and career growth.
About the roleThis role is technical leadership first, with people management alongside it. You'll shape the architecture of an event-driven Azure platform, lead .NET backend development, and run a team of full-time engineers and contractors from early-career to lead level. Much of the work is net-new, so you'll also help define how the team is structured and operates as it grows.
What you'll do- Design and evolve a distributed platform on Azure: containerized services, asynchronous messaging, PostgreSQL, Redis, and blob storage
- Lead backend development in modern .NET (ASP.NET Core APIs, Entity Framework Core, CQRS-style patterns) and set the bar in code reviews
- Own and improve multi-stage Azure DevOps YAML pipelines for infrastructure, container builds, and environment deployments
- Improve platform performance, cost, and operational simplicity
- Manage and mentor engineers, grow their cloud skills, and delegate so the team owns execution
- Partner with senior leadership and serve as backup to your manager
What you bring- 10+ years in software engineering, application development, or IT, including 6+ years of hands-on software engineering with cloud-based applications
- 3+ years directly managing and developing software engineering teams
- Experience leading greenfield, enterprise-grade application delivery or comparable large-scale work
- Experience with .NET, React, and Azure, or comparable technologies
- Ability to mentor engineers on cloud-native patterns, distributed systems, and cloud architecture
- A strong technical foundation, with the judgment to delegate instead of becoming a bottleneck
- Clear communication with senior leaders and non-technical stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience with demonstrable cloud architecture expertise
- Authorization to work in the US without sponsorship, now or in the future
Nice to haves- 6+ years of cloud-native work on Azure; 3+ years with Azure Container Apps, AKS, or similar orchestration
- Production microservices and event-driven systems (Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Event Hubs)
- Modern C# and .NET 8+, TypeScript and Node.js, Bash or PowerShell
- Docker multi-stage builds, Azure Container Registry, Bicep or Terraform, and Azure networking and data services
- Azure certifications (AZ-400, AZ-305, AZ-204, AZ-104), CSM, or SAFe Agilist
- Professional services background (legal, financial services, accounting, or consulting), legal technology or document management, and SOC 2, ISO 27001, or GDPR exposure
- Experience leading a team of roughly 10 to 25 engineers
