Every day, insurance decisions affect Maine families, businesses, and communities. The Maine Bureau of Insurance (BOI) plays an essential role in ensuring that insurance companies operating in Maine meet their obligations and treat consumers fairly.

BOI seeks an experienced, detail-oriented Senior Market Conduct Examiner to join our Market Conduct Unit. This position offers an opportunity to apply your insurance knowledge, investigative skills, and analytical judgment to complex regulatory work that supports a fair, transparent, and accountable insurance marketplace.

What You Will Do:
  • As a team member in the Market Conduct Unit, you will: Investigate complaints regarding insurance companies, brokers, and agents, evaluating business practices and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform data analysis of the insurance market in Maine to identify compliance concerns requiring further inquiry.
  • Assist in planning market conduct examinations of insurance companies and other licensed entities doing business in Maine to ensure compliance with Maine laws and regulations.
  • Perform examination work under the standards established by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Coordinate and participate in research projects, compile data, and prepare reports for legislative committees and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare examination and investigative reports that clearly communicate findings, legal considerations, and recommendations.
  • Ensure accurate data collection and analysis for a variety of monthly and quarterly reports.

What We Are Looking For:

We are seeking a professional who brings insurance industry experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to evaluate complex information and communicate findings effectively. The ideal candidate will have:
  • Knowledge of insurance industry principles, practices, products, operations, and management.
  • Experience with insurance compliance, investigations, audits, examinations, or regulatory review.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and execute complex market conduct and other complex examinations.
  • Familiarity with Maine's insurance laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of statistical sampling methodology and research methods.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism when working with colleagues, stakeholders, and regulated entities.
  • Ability to travel occasionally within Maine and out-of-state.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A six (6) year equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in insurance or closely related field -OR-
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business/Public Administration, Accounting, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in insurance or a related field

Experience examining insurance companies or other regulated entities for compliance with established laws, rules, and regulations is preferred.
