Senior Mechanical Design EngineerDuration: 6 months | Rate: £70 per hour inside IR35 via Umbrella | Location: Amesbury, Hybrid (travel to Farnborough/Malvern may be required ad hoc) | SC Clearance/eligibility required.Role PurposeBeing a go-to individual within the Allocated Design Team & surrounding SMEs, the Senior Engineer – Mechanical Designer will lead the delivery of Mechanical Design solutions and take ownership of complex tasks, ensuring high‑integrity engineering and managing complex, unusual tasks with significant challenges. They will explore and test the problem space thoroughly, guide others in generating hardware solutions, and lead & coordinate design reviews and group critiques to delight customers. The company supports numerous domains, such as Aircraft Modification, Land Platform Development & Autonomy and Ship Design. Each team has unique engineering specialities & focal points.Key AccountabilitiesGuide others and corral SMEs at Design Reviews; hold pre‑reviews, chair reviews for internal tasks / lower level, single customers; may work towards Design Review Chair competency.Exhibit gravitas coupled with captivating content to sell persuasive stances and make concepts immersive for customers.Bring together & chair engineering reviews.Set visual standards in the local team, encouraging higher standards.Contribute to continuous improvement throughout delivery.Write detailed reports and manage technical teams to deliver optimised designs.Understand verification & validation needs and set up requirement gathering to maximise success for later stages.Understand regulatory environment and project needs.Strategise to meet customer needs more effectively.Commercially aware of contract obligations.Apply prototyping mentality beyond hardware creation.Foresee overspend and help keep the project on track.Work with PM to recognise risks and exploit externally driven change.Proactively address potential issues, forecast unresolved risks and mitigate them.Communicate excellently with rigor on driving daily delivery.Understand team dynamics, human behaviours, and psychology to maximise delivery success.Focus on the value proposition the design brings by delivering the work.Oversee TDP creation and ensure robustness.Support others in developing creative confidence to experiment.Apply design thinking methodology beyond design.Map Value Streams and maximise value for the customer.Sign off complex estimates with multiple inputs beyond skill area.Adept at using the 7 wastes to find opportunities to reduce effort / minimise WIP and maximise throughput.Aware of customer budget constraints and tailor solutions and estimates accordingly.Set pace and communication cadence requirements clearly from offset.Provide technical advice or presentation to customers, stakeholders and peers.Inventive problem solving and drive community standards.Maintain high levels of integrity when measuring outcomes with political, regulatory or business implications.Negotiate customer requirements and cost; trade requirements with PM/Systems engineer/customer as appropriate.Critique & review delivery strategies from start to finish from a DFM view.Exhibit excellent understanding of both external and internal manufacturing techniques.Use CAD tools beyond conventional use; clean thinking on feature trees.Deep understanding of technical drawings as communication; clarity & accuracy.Best‑practice input to design methodology; follow external feedback.Use bespoke or specialist software such as FEA/CFD, etc.Familiar with safety engineering tools at different project lifecycle stages.Compile HAZID and contribute to Design Safety Cases.Research corporate policies.Manage quality assurance and author processes; understand statistical approaches to safety.Lead LCM 2 delegation and TDP signatures.Check and release HCC2 drawings; deep understanding of tolerancing & dimension styles.Possibly obtain Design Cert (QDC) signature – non‑regulated commercial work HCC2 (SDA for simple tasks).Target capabilities & knowledge: coatings, corrosion, materials science & materials selection, concept design & development, requirement capture & analysis, regulations, project lifecycles, hazard identification, safety cases & safety management systems.Domain‑specific Expertise & GovernanceFamiliar with which safety engineering tools can be used at particular stages of a project lifecycle.Compile HAZID and contribute to Design Safety Cases.Assist in researching corporate policies.Manage QA and author processes.Understand statistical approaches to safety.Hold Technical Lead LCM 2 delegation.Lead TDP creation and signature.Check and release HCC2 drawings; deep understanding of tolerancing & dimension styles.Key Capabilities / KnowledgeCoatings, corrosion, materials science & materials selection.Concept design & development, requirement capture & analysis.Regulations, project lifecycles, hazard identification, safety cases & safety management systems.Experience with HAZID/Design for Safety/Regulations such as CA marking.Manufacturing experience and exposure to various methods.QualificationsExperience: HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or Product Design (or equivalent).Designing technical hardware solutions – ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem solving.Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, subject matter experts.Significant experience creating concepts & generating solution ideas exposed to critique.Deep understanding of budgets, group behaviour, patterns of behaviour & use that to deliver on time, quality, cost.Knowledge & understanding of engineering fundamentals: materials, stress, mechanical design, design principles, electrical awareness.Formal training in HAZID/Design for Safety/Regulations such as CA marking.Extensive manufacturing environment exposure.Desirable: Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design degree or equivalent.Desirable: GCSE Maths, English, Science;
