Johnson Service Group is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a 6-month contract position in the Westminster, MD area.


Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Composite Materials
Pay Rate: $66.67/hr
Location: Westminster, MD (21157)
Contract Length: 6-months - Will become a permanent position for the right candidate.
Schedule: 6am start time. 9x80 Mon-Fri - every other Friday off.
Overtime Requirements: Some weekends and Occasional Friday

Description:
This position is for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role supporting research and new product development in Eaton’s Mission Systems Division (MSD).
The engineer performs tasks including design, analysis, risk management, planning, and coordination with other technical functions and program management related to all work within the scope of assigned projects. The engineer often acts as a technical leader for large projects or multiple smaller projects. The engineer could work on several different projects in the span of a single day; every day is vastly different.
Projects include space launch products (commercial space), composite materials / pneumatic systems, high pressure gas storage, aircraft materials, etc. SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION.
They will contribute effectively towards team goals and influence those within their function and beyond to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
A successful candidate will need knowledge and have prior experience of Aerospace new product introduction methods and high-pressure pneumatic or hydraulic systems and components. Experience in relatable industries and domains will also be considered.

What you’ll do:
  • Senior Mechanical Design Engineers work in a dynamic, fast paced environment and are responsible for successful execution of research, design, development, testing and certification activities. Including:
  • Coordinate and execute product design activities in accordance with project cost and schedule constraints.
  • Develop conceptual designs into a mature product solution.
  • Manage technical risk through exhaustive identification, prioritization of risk mitigation activities, and data driven design changes where appropriate.
  • Develop engineering standards and design guides to support continuous improvement of the relevant engineering domain.
  • Work to Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles including careful management of Critical to Quality requirements through the design lifecycle, rigorous knowledge building of the design space, understanding of the effects of manufacturing variation, and design for manufacturing and assembly to meet product recurring cost targets.
  • Work directly with internal and external customers, suppliers, project engineers, design engineers, test engineers, sustainment engineers, Centers of Excellence, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, program management, and other functions to develop systems and products.
  • Coach junior engineers within the incumbents specified domain.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years of system, product design, development, and/or production design problem resolution experience.
  • Knowledge and prior experience of Aerospace new product introduction methods and high-pressure pneumatic or hydraulic systems and components. (OR experience in relatable industries and domains will also be considered.)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now or in the future.

Position Criteria:
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills working with a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to work mostly autonomously but with some oversite from a technical leader or engineering manager.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and collaboration with internal and external customers.
  • Have sound problem resolution, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD
  • Strong understanding of drawing standards and application of GD&T

Demonstrated track record of successfully applying several of the following engineering principles:
  • Aerospace new product introduction methods, regulatory standards, regulations, and certifications DFSS or Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) tools
  • Failure investigations of technical products or systems
  • Designing for high pressure pneumatics
  • Pneumatic or hydraulic valve design
  • Valve sealing technology Static and dynamic seal design
  • Oversite and comprehension of stress analysis (static, dynamic, fatigue, vibration, acceleration, etc.)
  • Steady state performance modeling
  • Dynamic performance modelling (mass spring systems, acceleration, etc.)
  • Electro magnetics (solenoid valves, latch valves)
  • Control Systems Thermodynamics

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Design for Six Sigma Greenbelt or Blackbelt
  • Aerospace / Military / DoD background
