Senior Mechanical Engineer

MW Talent is partnering with a well-established, multi-discipline engineering consulting firm to hire a Senior Mechanical Engineer for its Atlanta, Georgia office.
This is a full-time opportunity for a senior mechanical engineer who wants to stay hands-on technically while also taking on project leadership, mentoring, client relationship management, and business development. The right candidate will have strong AEC consulting experience, technical design strength, client-facing confidence, and the ability to help lead and grow a team.
This role is not only focused on design. It is a balanced role that includes technical execution, people leadership, and client-focused business development. The expected balance is approximately 60% to 70% technical engineering and project delivery, 15% to 20% mentoring and team leadership, and 10% to 15% business development, proposal support, networking, and client relationship management. This role offers the opportunity to help build and grow the Atlanta mechanical practice while remaining actively involved in technical engineering and project delivery.
Business development does not require bringing an existing book of business. Success in this role comes from growing existing client relationships, supporting proposals, networking within the local market, and identifying opportunities to expand existing accounts.
Work Schedule:
- This role is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
- The Atlanta office follows a 4-day in-office schedule, with work from home on Wednesdays.
- The office also offers an alternate schedule of four 9-hour days Monday through Thursday and a half day on Friday.
Relocation:
- Candidates should have an established presence in the Atlanta market. Relocation assistance is generally not available for this position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the mechanical design of HVAC systems and coordinate plumbing system design.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Oversee project budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
- Lead design team efforts and mentor junior engineers.
- Work directly with clients and support long-term client relationships.
- Support business development efforts through proposal support, client communication, and industry involvement.
- Help grow existing client relationships and support repeat business.
- Prepare and review technical drawings, ductwork plans, piping plans, sections, isometric drawings, and bills of materials.
- Perform HVAC calculations and analysis using industry software.
- Review work for code compliance, quality, accuracy, and client standards
- Develop fee proposals and qualifications-based selection (QBS) proposals in support of business development efforts.
- Coordinate with architects, owners, contractors, and internal engineering teams.
- Contribute to office growth, department goals, team culture, and morale.
- Travel as needed for client meetings, site visits, and project work.
Required Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Progressive mechanical engineering experience within an AEC consulting engineering environment required.
- Experience designing mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, higher education, government, industrial, or similar building projects.
- Strong HVAC system design experience with the ability to coordinate plumbing design within multidisciplinary projects.
- Experience coordinating with architects, structural, electrical, plumbing, and civil disciplines.
- Experience managing projects, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
- Experience working directly with clients.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading design teams.
- Experience with load calculation software.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Revit.
- Experience preparing fee proposals and qualification-based proposals.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, energy, and plumbing codes.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead interdisciplinary project teams.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in the local Atlanta AEC consulting market.
- Experience helping grow a department, team, or client base.
- Energy modeling experience.
- Experience working with local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and familiarity with the Atlanta permitting and code review process.
- Active local industry involvement.
- Project management experience or certifications.
