This is a high-impact role for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys leading complex MEP and infrastructure projects, working directly with clients, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

In this position, you will lead the design and implementation of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection, for a wide range of corporate, public, institutional, and infrastructure projects. Project types may include corporate, county and municipal facilities, schools, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, and other community-focused infrastructure developments.

This role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on technical design with project leadership. You will help advance projects through completion while contributing to new designs, future initiatives, and long-term client relationships.

This role reports to the Director of MEP Engineering within Tech Services.

What You’ll Work On

You will support and lead mechanical engineering efforts for projects involving HVAC systems, plumbing systems and fire protection systems, facility renovations, and mechanical improvements.

You will work closely with clients, contractors, architects, civil engineers, electrical engineers, and internal project teams to deliver practical, code-compliant, and cost-effective mechanical solutions.




Responsibilities


Mechanical System Design
  • Lead the design of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for public, institutional, and infrastructure projects 
  • Conduct feasibility studies to evaluate project requirements, technical constraints, and cost implications 
  • Perform load calculations, system sizing, and equipment selection 
  • Prepare mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents 
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements 
Project Leadership
  • Manage multiple mechanical engineering projects at various stages of design and construction 
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, electrical, architectural, and structural professionals 
  • Serve as a key technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and project stakeholders 
  • Help drive projects from initial concept through final construction closeout 
  • Support project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control efforts 
Construction Administration & Field Support
  • Review shop drawings, equipment submittals, RFIs, and contractor documentation 
  • Conduct site visits, field assessments, and inspections to evaluate existing conditions and construction progress 
  • Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and final system performance verification 
  • Provide technical recommendations to resolve field issues and improve system performance 
Team Mentorship
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior mechanical engineers and designers 
  • Support internal quality control, design reviews, and knowledge sharing 
  • Help strengthen team capabilities through coaching, collaboration, and technical leadership 

Qualifications


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field 
  • New Jersey Professional Engineer license preferred or ability to obtain through reciprocity
  • 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience 
  • Strong experience designing HVAC systems 
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit 
  • Working knowledge of ASHRAE, NFPA, and applicable building codes 
  • Experience providing construction administration and field engineering support
  • Experience with plumbing and fire protection system design 
  • Experience working on municipal, institutional, educational, or infrastructure projects 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate effectively with clients, contractors, and internal teams 
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
