Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity with our client in Omaha, NE. This position will serve as a Mechanical Lead or Mechanical Technical Lead supporting simple-cycle and combined-cycle power generation, heavy industrial, and process projects.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will provide technical leadership throughout engineering and design, with responsibility for mechanical equipment specifications, vendor coordination, project schedules and budgets, resource planning, and multidisciplinary project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Mechanical Lead or Mechanical Technical Lead on simple-cycle, combined-cycle power generation, heavy industrial, and process projects.
- Provide technical leadership and direction for mechanical engineering and design activities.
- Manage project schedules and budgets and provide regular status reports identifying progress, issues, risks, and resource needs.
- Develop and maintain engineering resource plans.
- Prepare equipment inquiry and Request for Quotation (RFQ) packages.
- Perform technical bid evaluations and develop equipment selection recommendations.
- Review vendor drawings and technical documentation for compliance with project specifications, applicable codes, and industry standards.
- Develop technical scopes of work, engineering job notes, and supporting project documentation.
- Specify and evaluate fixed and rotating mechanical equipment.
- Perform field walkdowns to collect information required for engineering and design activities.
- Prepare engineering man-hour estimates for proposals and project planning.
- Participate in client, vendor, and internal project-team meetings.
- Present technical information, designs, and recommendations for peer and project review.
- Independently evaluate and apply appropriate engineering techniques, procedures, standards, and criteria.
- Provide discipline-specific technical expertise and training to engineering personnel and clients as needed.
- Coordinate, supervise, and review the work of engineers and technicians assigned to projects.
- Support multidisciplinary engineering coordination throughout project execution.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of mechanical engineering experience within the power generation industry.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems associated with power generation or industrial processing facilities.
- Demonstrated experience with simple-cycle and/or combined-cycle power generation projects.
- Strong technical background involving:
- Heat exchangers
- Pumps and rotating equipment
- ASME pressure vessels
- Piping systems
- ASME piping codes
- Experience developing specifications for fixed and rotating equipment.
- Experience reviewing equipment vendor documentation and technical bids.
- Ability to lead mechanical engineering activities and coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
- Mechanical engineering experience within the industrial construction and power generation industries.
- Previous experience serving as a Mechanical Lead or Technical Lead on large engineering or EPC projects.
- Experience supporting projects from engineering and equipment procurement through construction and commissioning.
