A well-established organization within the medical stop loss industry is seeking a Senior Medical Stop Loss Underwriter to join its growing underwriting team. This individual will be responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing both new and renewal business while helping drive profitable growth across a diverse portfolio of self-funded employer groups.
This role offers an opportunity to work closely with brokers, TPAs, consultants, and internal business partners in a highly visible underwriting capacity. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical underwriting expertise with the ability to build relationships, communicate effectively with external partners, and contribute to overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Underwrite and price new and renewal medical stop loss opportunities.
Evaluate risk acceptability, determine pricing strategies, and make coverage recommendations within established guidelines.
Review underwriting submissions, claims experience, large claimant activity, and benefit plan designs.
Analyze proposed plan changes and assess their impact on underwriting results and profitability.
Maintain a profitable book of business while supporting retention and growth objectives.
Partner closely with sales, account management, and other internal teams to support client and broker relationships.
Communicate underwriting decisions and pricing strategies to brokers, TPAs, and other external stakeholders.
Complete RFPs, quote requests, and underwriting reviews in a timely manner.
Monitor market trends and competitive conditions to support effective underwriting decisions.
Participate in broker meetings, strategy discussions, and business development initiatives.
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriting staff as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field preferred.
5+ years of Medical Stop Loss underwriting experience.
Strong knowledge of self-funded health plans, stop loss products, plan design analysis, and large claim evaluation.
Demonstrated success managing new business and renewal underwriting responsibilities.
Experience working directly with brokers, TPAs, consultants, and distribution partners.
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and negotiation skills.
Ability to effectively balance underwriting discipline with growth objectives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Experience with ESLOffice or comparable stop loss underwriting platforms preferred.
Professional designations such as CEBS, CLU, FLMI, or similar are a plus.
