Senior Network Engineer — IPv6 832

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer — IPv6 with deep expertise in IPv6 technologies to support network assessment, design, testing, and migration initiatives. This role focuses on IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack environments, multicast routing, and Cisco networking platforms.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience designing and implementing IPv6 solutions, validating network infrastructure, troubleshooting complex routing environments, and developing technical documentation to support large-scale network initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

IPv6 Network Assessment

• Conduct comprehensive assessments of existing network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and end-host systems, to evaluate IPv6 readiness.

• Identify gaps in existing IPv4 configurations and develop prioritized roadmaps for IPv6 integration.

• Validate hardware and software compatibility with IPv6, including Cisco IOS and IOS-XE features.

• Document current-state network topology and provide detailed findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

Network Design

• Architect IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack solutions that maintain backward compatibility while enabling IPv6 functionality.

• Design scalable IPv6 addressing plans.

• Develop multicast routing designs for IPv6 environments.

• Create high-level and low-level design documentation (HLD/LLD), including topology diagrams, IP allocation schemes, and routing policy specifications.

• Collaborate with security, systems, and application teams to ensure end-to-end IPv6 compatibility.

Testing & Implementation

• Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for IPv6 deployment scenarios, including:

  • Dual-stack environments

  • Tunneling technologies (6in4, GRE, ISATAP)

  • Translation mechanisms (NAT64/DNS64)

• Perform lab-based proof-of-concept (PoC) testing before production deployment.

• Validate multicast functionality, routing protocol behavior, and QoS policies in IPv6 environments.

• Troubleshoot complex issues across dual-stack networks and perform root-cause analysis.

• Develop production migration procedures, including change management documentation and rollback plans.

General Responsibilities

• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for IPv6 and multicast technologies.

• Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge transfer on IPv6 best practices.

• Participate in Change Advisory Board (CAB) reviews and provide technical input on network changes.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive network engineering experience in enterprise or service provider environments.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience with IPv6 addressing, routing, and migration strategies.

• Proven experience designing and operating IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack networks.

• Strong knowledge of multicast routing protocols, including:

  • PIM-SM

  • IGMP

  • MLD

• Proficiency with OSPFv2/OSPFv3 and BGP, including IPv6 address families.

• Hands-on experience with Cisco routing and switching platforms.

• Cisco CCNP (Enterprise or Service Provider) certification or equivalent industry experience.

• Strong technical documentation skills, including network designs, test plans, and assessment reports.

Preferred Qualifications

• Cisco CCIE certification (Enterprise Infrastructure or Service Provider).

• Experience with network automation tools such as Python or Ansible for IPv6 deployments at scale.

• Familiarity with SNMP, NetFlow, and network monitoring tools in IPv6 environments.

• Experience implementing security policies and ACLs in dual-stack networks.

• Previous experience participating in or leading large-scale IPv6 migration projects.

• Understanding of federal or regulatory IPv6 compliance frameworks, such as OMB M-21-07.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
