Senior Network Engineer

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) is seeking a Senior Network Engineer in Norfolk, Virginia. This position is located in the Information Technology department and requires a strong understanding of networking, security, and telecommunications. The Senior Network Engineer will diagnose, triage, resolve, and document network-related support calls and questions from users or customers. They will evaluate requests for new services, propose appropriate solutions, and perform testing and turn-up of these services. They will also ensure accuracy of service and network documentation, maintain network integrity, monitor network alarms, troubleshoot network issues, aid in restoration of network services, and assist in root cause analysis events.

The Senior Network Engineer should have well-developed decision making, analytical, and problem-solving skills, displaying the ability to provide solutions where they may not currently exist. They must possess excellent oral/written communication skills, be a self-starter, results-oriented with strong organizational ability and a high level of integrity. The Senior Network Engineer must be able to work independently, but also be a solid team player and contributor. Errors in work or actions can affect company-wide networks.

Position demands include a Bachelor's degree or 10+ years of directly related experience, at least 5 years' experience supporting MS Windows environment, thorough understanding of LAN/WAN, DNS, routing, switches, security appliances, and proficiency in Cisco Catalyst Center, network automation, and assurance. Experience with device onboarding and lifecycle management, troubleshooting and optimizing software-defined networking (SDN) solutions, strong understanding of Cisco ISE architecture and deployment models, ability to integrate ISE with Active Directory (AD), PKI, and other identity providers, hands-on experience with TrustSec, segmentation, and profiling, strong understanding of Zero Trust Security (ZTS) principles, experience implementing network segmentation and micro segmentation, knowledge of Software-Defined Perimeter (SDP) and Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), familiarity with multi-factor authentication (MFA) and least privilege access models, ability to document network designs, policies, and configurations, familiarity with Firepower Management Center (FMC), experience with migrating from Juniper SRX firewalls to Cisco Next-Gen Firewalls, ability to configure Cisco Wireless Assurance for wireless analytics, experience in designing and implementing Cisco Wireless LAN solutions, proficiency in Wi-Fi security standards (WPA2, WPA3, EAP, 802.11r/k/v), understanding of RF planning, spectrum analysis, and interference mitigation.

Physical requirements include carrying, lifting, walking, climbing, pulling, crouching, standing, hearing, stooping, kneeling, talking, and visual acuity. The worker must be able to lift 50lbs and be comfortable in an outdoor environment in all types of weather in a variety of conditions; must be willing and able to pull and install various types of network infrastructure cable and be able to work in tight spaces.

The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating equipment where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by technicians, service people, etc.

Reports to Network Manager. Collaborates with members of the IT Infrastructure team. Mentors and helps to provide direction for Network Engineers.

Principal responsibilities include designing, implementing, and maintaining LAN and WAN wired and wireless connectivity for all sites, configuring firewalls, routers, switches, VPN and security software and appliances to support company requirements, assisting in the design and implementation of new systems, troubleshooting LAN and WAN connectivity issues and assist with upgrades and modifications as required, lead, coordinate and/or participate in IT projects as assigned, assist in completion of daily checklists for network health and security and raise concerns as necessary, maintain cabling plant diagrams and documentation.

Accountability includes designing and implementing secure network structures and satisfy the working requirements of the IT department. Considered to be a networking expert by his peers.

Standard equipment issue includes a smart phone, laptop computer – power user, dual monitor, docking station.

Must be willing to participate in on call rotation. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Must be willing to work additional hours or nights and weekends as necessary. A credit check will be required for this position.
