Description
This position is responsible professional and administrative work in complex planning in the Community Development Division. Responsibilities also include organizing and coordinating the advanced and more complex studies, analyzing research data and preparing written summary reports. Work is performed under the guidance of a division manager and is reviewed through reports, conferences, and results attained.
Starting pay is determined by level of experience and education:
Senior Planner - Transportation: $72,910.74 - $114,574.03
Transportation Engineer: $80,384.10 - $126,317.86
Examples of Duties
Senior Planner - Transportation Responsibilities:
- Identifies solutions and coordinates efforts to meet ongoing transportation and transit needs and issues.
- Works with members of the industry, local, County and State agencies and various departments within the city to formulate policies, procedures and programs relating to transportation issues.
- Coordinates, prepares and submits projects to obtain local and state funding from grant programs including but not limited to Transportation Surtax and Roads for Economic Vitality (REV).
- Meets with development professionals, developers, outside agencies, and the public regarding development proposals or other problems thus serving in a key liaison role for transportation issues.
- Reviews and analyzes site plans to determine compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances and regulations in coordination with the citys traffic engineering consultant.
- Creates, implements, and maintains systems for tracking and monitoring progress, including conducting surveys and other outcome-based performance measures to achieve the citys and neighborhood vision.
- Represents the city and works as key liaison to partner and coordinate transportation and transit planning program activities with planning organizations, councils, boards, and other state agencies, local governments, consultants, and general public.
- Assists Parks and Recreation Department with transportation planning efforts concerning the Community Shuttle Program. Submits required reporting to the County/State as needed.
- Provides technical assistance and answers public inquiries regarding transportation and transit issues, programs, and projects.
- Coordinates and implements Traffic Management Team meetings.
- Develops, administers, and monitors the citys Traffic Calming program.
- Coordinate and administer FDOT Local Agency Program (LAP) projects in the city as needed.
Transportation Engineer Responsibilities:
- Coordinates, prepares and submits projects to obtain local and state funding, from sources such as MAP (Surtax), Complete Streets & Localized Initiatives Program (CSLIP), state/federal grants, etc.
- Meets with development professionals, developers, outside agencies, and the public regarding development proposals or other problems while serving in a key liaison role for transportation issues.
- Reviews and analyzes site plans to determine compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances and regulations in coordination with the Citys traffic engineering consultant.
- Works with members of the industry, local, County and State agencies and various departments within the City to formulate policies, procedures and programs relating to transportation issues.
- Represents the City and works as a key liaison to partner agencies and coordinates transportation and transit planning program activities with planning organizations, councils, boards, and other state agencies, consultants, and general public, including, but not limited to the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and Broward County School Board Working Group.
- Provides technical assistance and answers public inquiries regarding transportation and transit issues, programs, and projects. Advises department heads and other officials on City planning policies; provides information and interpretation of codes and regulations regarding Public Works development issues.
- Prepares engineering plans and specifications for in house transportation projects and repairs including preparation of permit applications for various permitting agencies.
- Assists in planning, design and construction management for capital multimodal transportation improvement projects and provide guidance for the day-to-day operations, administration, and decision making related to roadway and pedestrian improvement projects.
- Assists Purchasing division with bid preparation, including front-end documents and technical specifications. Attends pre-bid meetings, review bids, and makes recommendation to Purchasing Division.
- Provides technical information and interpretation to the public, developers, permitting agencies, consultants, contractors and other City Staff.
- Acts as main point of contact and project manager of the City's Traffic Calming Program, including budget and internal/external meetings (i.e. Traffic Management Team).
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Urban or Transportation Planning, Public Administration, Engineering or other directly related field. Masters Degree preferred.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in community development, transportation planning, engineering, or transportation management programs. GIS experience and project management experience preferred but not required.
- An equivalent of combination of education, training, and related experience will be considered in lieu of Master's Degree.
